About The Position

Palmetto Bluff is nestled along the May River in the Lowcountry of South Carolina between Hilton Head Island and Savannah. As an award winning 20,000 acre development, the development encompasses a private member’s only club which includes a marina, restaurants, an equestrian center, a shooting club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, The Crossroads Reversable King Collins Golf Course, Anson Point Golf Course designed by Coore and Crenshaw, a lawn and racquet club, a community farm, and more.  In addition, Palmetto Bluff has an extensive nature preserve, walking trails, retail shopping, art gallery, and a vibrant village, all which pay homage to the region’s rich heritage. Job Summary: The 1st Assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent.  Under the superintendent’s supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the management of the golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, cart paths, etc.  The assistant superintendent helps plan and prioritize work schedules, maintains accurate records, trains and develops the staff and communicates well within the golf management department and club.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy/plant/soil sciences desired, or equivalent knowledge, which may include an Associate Degree in Turfgrass Science offered by some universities
  • Requires current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of the game of golf
  • Working knowledge of: Construction, turf establishment, and cultural practices employed on golf course putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers
  • Planting and culture of the turfgrass used o golf courses
  • Proper use of fertilizers and soil conditioners
  • Pest diagnosis and control methods, including materials
  • Drainage systems
  • Watering practices and irrigation systems
  • Equipment operation, service and repair
  • Computer applications and operation
  • Ability to schedule and supervise work to achieve the most efficient use of employees and resources
  • Effectively communicate with all staff, members, vendors, architects, owners, consultants, and fellow professionals

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning and supervising of the management of all golf course related areas. (greens, tees, fairways, roughs, range, native edges, etc.)
  • Develop, train, and supervise staff to perform all related golf course management functions and use of the equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and management of pump, irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Scouts the golf course for potential problems (disease, insects, weeds, irrigation needs, mowing needs, etc.) and reports findings to the golf course superintendent.
  • Maintains weather and environmental records
  • Writes daily schedule and reviews weekly schedule with superintendent for changes or updates
  • Supervises and/or operates pesticide/fertilizer applications and calibration of equipment
  • Assist in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation
