About The Position

This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The role requires adherence to the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics, modeling non-discriminatory practices, and assuming complete responsibility for the conduct and teachings of the team. Availability for practices and games from Monday through Saturday, including some holidays, is expected. The coach will supervise equipment, establish positive relationships, attend required meetings, and conduct organizational meetings for athletes. Injury protocols, roster management, score reporting, and communication regarding cancellations or incidents are also key responsibilities. The coach must supervise team members after practices/games and complete end-of-season reports, complying with all relevant regulations and handbooks. Decision-making authority is within the scope of the team, with broader issues escalated to the Athletic Director. Player assessment, modeling sports-like behavior, and participation in special events like parent's night and banquets are expected. Support tasks include distributing and maintaining eligibility forms and emergency data cards. Additional duties involve attending staff development and professional activities to improve coaching performance.

Requirements

Must meet the First Aid/CPR/AED requirement prior to applying.
Potential candidates must meet the First Aid/CPR/AED requirement prior to applying for this position.
A person who holds a valid certificate to teach physical education may coach any sport in any school, but first must meet the FIRST AID/CPR/AED requirement prior to applying to coaching.
Other Certified Teachers and Non-Teacher Coaches must complete one of the two pathways within the specified time frame: New York State Coaching Certification program offered by Erie 1 BOCES or NFHS NYS Specific Second Pathway Process.
Some experience in organized soccer at the club, select, modified, junior varsity, varsity or college level preferred.
Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
Candidates must be employed by the Board of Education in accordance with Article XII-G of the Master Contract between the Buffalo Board of Education and the Buffalo Teacher’s Federation.

Responsibilities

Coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques.
Adhering to the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics.
Modeling non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
Assuming complete responsibility for the conduct of their team.
Assuming responsibility for the philosophy and teachings of the entire athletic program, if applicable.
Being available for contests and practices at the start of the athletic season, Monday through Saturday and some holidays.
Supervising the use, issuance, return, cleaning, inventory, and storage of equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
Submitting equipment and supply requests to the Athletic Director.
Establishing positive relationships with coaches, athletes, parents, and community members.
Attending meetings called by the Athletic Director or Building Principal.
Attending league, section, and coaches’ association meetings when required.
Conducting an organization meeting with the athletes to explain tryouts, methods of selection, cutting procedures, and code of conduct.
Preparing and submitting a schedule of scrimmages and non-league contests to the Athletic Director.
Following established procedures set by the District and Medical staff in the event of an athlete’s injury.
Submitting initial and final roster to the Athletic Director and updating as necessary.
Reporting scores to news media when required.
Notifying the Athletic Director and Building staff of any canceled games, scrimmages or practices and any unusual events or incidents.
Supervising team members after practices/games until all have left the locker room, picked up by parents, or left the building and/or grounds.
Completing end of season reports.
Complying with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook.
Making decisions regarding his/her particular team, in keeping with established policies and procedures.
Assessing player’s skills, monitors players during competition and practice.
Modeling sports-like behavior and maintaining appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
Participating in special activities that include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
Performing support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
Attending staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
Performing any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director & Principal or other appropriate administrator.
