About The Position

This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The role requires adherence to the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics, modeling non-discriminatory practices, and assuming complete responsibility for the conduct of the team. The coach will also be responsible for the philosophy and teachings of the athletic program, if applicable. Availability for contests and practices from Monday through Saturday and some holidays is expected. Responsibilities include supervising the use, issuance, return, cleaning, inventory, and storage of equipment, uniforms, and supplies, as well as submitting equipment and supply requests. Establishing positive relationships with coaches, athletes, parents, and community members is key. The coach must attend required meetings and conduct an organization meeting with athletes to explain try-outs, selection methods, cutting procedures, and the code of conduct. Preparing and submitting schedules, following procedures for athlete injuries, submitting rosters, and reporting scores are also part of the role. The coach must notify the Athletic Director of any canceled games, scrimmages, or practices and any unusual events. Supervision of team members after practices/games is required until all have left the locker room or been picked up. End-of-season reports must be completed, and compliance with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI, and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook is mandatory. The coach will make decisions regarding their team within established policies, reserving broader decisions for the Athletic Director. Player skills will be assessed, and players monitored during competition and practice. Sports-like behavior and appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators must be modeled. Participation in special activities like parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies is expected. Support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records will be performed. Additionally, the coach will attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance and perform any other related duties assigned by the Athletic Director & Principal or other appropriate administrator.

Requirements

  • Completion of an online application at www.buffaloschools.org.
  • Potential candidates must meet the FIRST AID/CPR/AED requirement prior to applying to coach.
  • A person who holds a valid certificate to teach physical education may coach any sport in any school, but first must meet the FIRST AID/CPR/AED requirement prior to applying to coaching.
  • Other Certified Teachers and Non-Teacher Coaches must complete one of the two pathways within the specified time frame: New York State Coaching Certification program offered by Erie 1 BOCES or NFHS NYS Specific Second Pathway Process.
  • Some experience in organized football at the club, select, modified, junior varsity, varsity or college level preferred.
  • Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  • Candidates must be employed by the Board of Education in accordance with Article XII-G of the Master Contract between the Buffalo Board of Education and the Buffalo Teacher’s Federation.

Responsibilities

  • Attending league, section, and coaches’ association meetings when required.
  • Conducting an organization meeting with the athletes to explain try-outs, methods of selection, cutting procedures, and code of conduct.
  • Preparing and submitting a schedule of scrimmages and non-league contest to the Athletic Director in a timely manner.
  • Following established procedures set by the District and Medical staff in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Submitting initial and final roster to the Athletic Director and updating as necessary.
  • Reporting scores to news media when required.
  • Notifying the Athletic Director and Building staff of any canceled games, scrimmages or practices and any unusual events or incidents.
  • Supervising team members after practices/games until all have left the locker room, picked up by parents, or left the building and/or grounds.
  • Completing end of season reports.
  • Complying with all policies and procedures outlines in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook.
  • Making decisions regarding his/her particular team, in keeping with established policies and procedures.
  • Assessing player’s skills, monitors players during competition and practice.
  • Modeling sports-like behavior and maintaining appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Participating in special activities that include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Performing support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
  • Attending staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Performing any other related duties as assigned by the, Athletic Director & Principal or other appropriate administrator.
