About The Position
This Assistant General Counsel role is part of the U-Haul International Legal Department and is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with significant employment litigation and traditional labor law experience. The position is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and is an in-office role, not eligible for remote work. The role involves learning diverse business lines, providing responsive counsel, and assertive representation, with opportunities for growth within the department. The ideal candidate is a proactive, trustworthy professional with a strong sense of initiative and a collaborative spirit.
Requirements
- JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Licensed in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in class and single-claimant employment litigation.
- Excellent research, writing, strategic, and analytical skills.
- Strong judgment in prioritizing work, managing time, and meeting deadlines.
- Willing to work primarily in-office in Midtown Phoenix with reasonable flexibility for work-life balance.
Nice To Haves
- Substantial experience in traditional labor law.
- Prior experience in California PAGA matters.
- Prior traditional labor experience, including union avoidance, unfair labor practices, organizing campaigns, elections, and picketing.
- Prior experience in Canadian employment law.
Responsibilities
- Handle docket of single-plaintiff and class/collective employment matters in courts and arbitration across the U.S. and Canada, including PAGA, wage/hour, discrimination, FMLA, and retaliation claims.
- Manage outside employment counsel effectively.
- Serve as backup to non-litigation employment counsel for day-to-day questions and counsel regarding EEOC and state agency position statements.
- Stay updated on employment law developments and provide related counsel.
- Provide counsel regarding compliance with the NLRA, WARN Act, and similar state or local laws.
- Handle NLRB unfair labor practice charges and representation petitions.
- Manage outside labor counsel effectively.
- Support the development and execution of a positive team member relations and union-free program.
- Stay updated on labor law developments and provide related counsel.
- Provide legal advice to U-Haul field personnel on general legal issues.
- Exercise good judgment in working with paralegals and assistants toward litigation and project objectives.
- Collaborate effectively within the Legal Department and with representatives of other departments.
- Support department operational objectives.
- Embrace opportunities for professional growth to contribute to other areas of the Legal Department.
- Triage and manage simultaneous time-sensitive matters.
- Occasional business travel.
