The Assistant General Counsel – Clinical Operations & Risk Management will serve as the primary contact for hospital operators dealing with daily patient care issues. This role involves advising healthcare providers on patient care risk issues, including reporting incidents to regulators, responding to citations and requests for action plans, managing medical staff issues, and handling subpoenas for medical records. The attorney will take a lead role in maintaining and improving an enterprise-wide risk management program to reduce claims against Prime’s hospitals. This includes developing and providing educational materials and training presentations to enhance clinical operations and prevent future claims. The position involves close collaboration with the Legal Department’s professional liability and general liability litigation teams to manage claims from pre-litigation to active litigation and implement process improvements post-litigation. The attorney will also actively manage, supervise, and coordinate outside counsel, direct strategy, and control costs in assigned areas.

Requirements

J.D. from ABA Accredited Law School
Member in Good Standing of State Bar of California.
Minimum of ten (10) years of prior legal experience in law firm, public sector, and/or in-house position.
At least five (5) years of experience specifically focused on advising healthcare providers with patient care risk issues.
Experience in the healthcare industry, preferably with hospitals.

Nice To Haves

Prior experience as a Registered Nurse is highly preferred.
Significant experience with hospital or healthcare risk management and exposure control is strongly preferred.
Prior experience interacting with regulatory bodies strongly preferred.
Experience handling organized medical staff matters preferred.
Prior litigation experience strongly preferred.
California licensed attorney preferred, but willing to consider highly qualified candidates not yet licensed in California as long as they are eligible for California registered in-house counsel status.

Responsibilities

Serve as the primary contact for hospital operators dealing with daily patient care issues.
Advise healthcare providers on patient care risk issues.
Handle reporting incidents to regulators.
Respond to citations and requests for action plans.
Manage medical staff issues.
Respond to subpoenas for medical records.
Maintain and improve an enterprise-wide risk management program designed to manage and reduce claims against Prime’s hospitals.
Develop and provide educational materials and training presentations to improve clinical operations and prevent future claims.
Work closely with the Legal Department’s professional liability and general liability litigation teams to manage claims.
Implement process improvement after litigation has resolved.
Actively manage, supervise, and coordinate outside counsel in assigned areas.
Direct strategy and contain costs.
