About The Position

Under supervision, this role assists with and performs gardening tasks, including installing, maintaining, and general care of living collections, horticultural displays, and special exhibitions within the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.

Requirements

  • One year of full-time experience in gardening work, including experience in planting, cultivating, and caring for trees, plants, shrubs, and lawns.
  • OR Thirty credits, at least fifteen of which must be in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field from an accredited college or community.
  • OR A certificate from a recognized horticultural or botanical program.
  • OR Education and/or experience equivalent to any of the above.
  • The ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to work independently or as part of a team.
  • The ability to perform strenuous physical tasks in a variety of conditions.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License valid in the State of New York at time of appointment or the ability to obtain a license within three months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with and performs planting, moving, cultivating, and caring for various types of plants including trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, tropical plants, desert plants, annuals, and bulbs.
  • Assists in and performs planting, caring for, and moving seasonal containers. Pots annuals, perennials, and tropical plants. Propagates plants.
  • Assists with and performs pruning, grooming, watering, fertilizing, and deadheading of various plants.
  • Assists in and performs tasks involved with the maintenance and operations of greenhouses and nurseries.
  • Assists with and performs preparation of soil and planting beds, including repairing planting areas, fertilizing, and watering.
  • Is trained in and assists with and performs pruning and spraying of trees, shrubs, and other plants.
  • Assists with and performs tasks involved in the operation of and care of hand and power gardening tools and equipment, making necessary operating adjustments and reporting needs for repairs and replacements.
  • Assists with and performs tasks involved in the plant health care program, including monitoring.
  • Keeps simple records and writes reports as required.
  • Drives vehicles and operates any other motorized equipment related to the performance of duties.
  • Removes snow and ice from landscapes and treats pathways to prevent buildup.
  • May supervise junior employees, volunteers, and students.
  • Performs tasks in accordance with training, including operating equipment and wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • As directed, performs various tasks in connection with cleaning of grounds and painting of fixtures and equipment.
