About The Position

Colby College, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), is seeking an Assistant Football Coach to begin August 1, 2026, and end June 30, 2027. The department boasts 32 intercollegiate sports competing at the Division III level, alongside a robust campus recreation program. Colby has made significant investments in its athletic facilities, including the state-of-the-art Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center and a 70-acre outdoor competition center, establishing a benchmark for Division III institutions. The Peak Performance Program further enhances student well-being and performance by integrating sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, and sports sciences. Located in central Maine, Colby offers excellent access to outdoor recreational venues. The Assistant Football Coach will support the head coach in all aspects of running a competitive Division III program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of rules and regulations governing collegiate football.
  • Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, interpersonal, and analytical skills and the capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and to exercise sound judgement and discretion.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering.
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements.
  • Ability to travel for team practices, competition, and scouting in and out of state.
  • Strong positive communication and interpersonal skills with all levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of student athletes from varied backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the importance of a diverse workforce to the college’s overall success.

  • Previous experience coaching and/or competing at the collegiate level is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the head coach in all duties involved in running a competitive Division III program.
  • On-site coaching in races and practices, including organization and implementation of daily practices.
  • Prepare film breakdown and analysis, and present analysis to team members.
  • Plan and prepare for competitions.
  • Provide support and encouragement to student athletes, including academic counseling and advising.
  • Recruit and retain talented athletes successfully.
  • Research academic and athletic credentials.
  • Build relationships with prospective student athletes and their families through email, phone and one-on-one meetings.
  • Organize and implement recruit visits.
  • Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes.
  • Serve as an effective role model for college-age students.
  • Comply with all guidelines, rules, and regulations set forth by Colby College, the NESCAC, and the NCAA.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the program.
  • Provide effective communication to the head coach.
  • Collaborate effectively with other Department of Athletics’ team members.
  • Assist with the coordination of team travel.
