About The Position

The Assistant Coach, Flag Football supports the Head Coach in leading and administering the interscholastic flag football program in alignment with District values, student safety expectations, and applicable Illinois High School Association guidance and rules. The Assistant Coach helps provide an educationally based experience that supports skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth, while collaborating closely with the Head Coach and Athletic Department.

  • Ability to support basic program organization, communication, and record keeping as assigned
  • Completion and maintenance of required certifications and trainings consistent with District expectations, including: Required coaching certification and professional development coursework, Concussion awareness training at the required interval, CPR/first aid training expectations consistent with District procedures
  • Willingness to comply with all applicable IHSA limitations related to out of season contact, open gyms, and non school participation
  • Knowledge of flag football rules, strategy, and skill progressions appropriate for a school based program
  • Ability to teach and reinforce fundamentals including throwing and catching mechanics, route running, ball carrying, flag pulling, defensive positioning, and team concepts
  • Understanding of safe practice structure and appropriate contact limitations in a flag football environment
  • Ability to support practice organization (stations, small group work, team periods) and provide clear instruction and feedback
  • Familiarity with game management responsibilities including substitutions, sideline organization, play communication, and sportsmanship expectations
  • Ability to assist with athlete evaluation and role development in a fair and consistent manner as directed by the Head Coach
  • Commitment to developing a positive, inclusive team culture that encourages participation and growth for athletes of varying experience levels

Responsibilities

  • Support the Head Coach in planning and supervising practices, contests, and team activities
  • Assist with skill instruction and athlete development, including coaching individuals and small groups
  • Help supervise student athletes before, during, and after practices and contests, including locker room and facility supervision as assigned
  • Support game day operations, including warm up organization, sideline management, substitutions, and assisting with in game adjustments as directed
  • Reinforce team standards related to attendance, conduct, sportsmanship, academics, and representing the school
  • Assist with communication needs as directed by the Head Coach, including schedule reminders, event details, and team expectations
  • Support program logistics as assigned (equipment setup and collection, uniforms, inventory, basic record keeping)
  • Coordinate with the Head Coach and Athletic Department on facility needs, equipment needs, and event operations as requested
  • Ensure compliance with District procedures and Athletic Department expectations, including required trainings and supervision standards
  • Promote a positive, inclusive team culture that supports accountability, confidence, and team unity
  • Promote positive representation of the school and program within the conference and community
