About The Position

The California Teachers Association (CTA) is seeking an Assistant Executive Director for Region 3, one of its four field-based regions supporting local chapters in pre-TK-14 and charter school settings. This role requires in-depth knowledge and experience in union organizing and contract campaigns, the ability to inspire members, staff, and communities, and a strong commitment to the labor movement and public education. The successful applicant will be part of the CTA management team, driving improvements in members' working conditions by leading staff and expanding site-based organizing, contract campaigns, door canvassing, membership recruitment, and other strategic initiatives. The role demands an exceptional ability to articulate a positive vision of CTA and lead others to action.

Requirements

  • Successful experience with and demonstrated skill in organization and coordination of complex group projects and activities including, but not limited to, running large scale, high-participation strategic campaigns.
  • Knowledge of effective staff and fiscal management techniques and corresponding experience.
  • Proven track record of running union programs and campaigns from concept to completion, including coordinating resources, timelines, staff management, and deliverables across multiple individuals, teams or departments.
  • A relentless drive to surpass campaign/program goals, who demonstrates a proactive approach, thrives under pressure, has the tenacity to tackle challenges head-on, and excels in a fast-paced, dynamic, rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated support for racial, social, and economic justice; worker's rights; and a well-funded public education.
  • Adaptable and flexible. Able to adjust seamlessly and effectively to changing factors and conditions that impact CTA campaigns, projects and other union programs.
  • Outstanding ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing public schools, school communities, labor unions, and the teaching profession in California and the nation.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to work and travel regularly, including evenings and weekends.

  • Bachelor's or higher degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, supervise, direct and otherwise manage the property, personnel and programs of CTA within the Region under the direction of the Executive Director or their designee.
  • Advise, coach, and manage staff whose primary responsibility is to serve as an organizer and who support chapter leaders in building and developing strategic organizing plans and leading strategic organizing campaigns.
  • Direction and supervision of all personnel and programs assigned to the Region including, but not limited to, organizing region-wide campaigns.
  • Preparation of a program-oriented budget for all CTA operations within the Region for inclusion in an overall statewide budget.
  • Responsibility for the affairs of CTA related to real estate and association property management within the Region in conjunction with the property management department.
  • Coordination and management of member and staff training programs, including on all aspects of organizing, including strategic campaigns, the relationship between organizing and power, the importance and effectiveness of one-on-one and small group meetings, and the need to organize parents and community.
  • Participation, including recommendation, in the employment, evaluation, reclassification, transfer and/or dismissal of all CTA employees within the Region.
  • Implementation of professional and associate staff evaluation programs.
  • Membership promotion including recruitment, retention and engagement programs.
  • Maintain liaison and consultation with leadership from Chapters, Service Center Councils and CTA Board of Directors levels within the Region.
  • Performs such other duties and special projects as may be assigned by the Executive Director or their designee.
