About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, as a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Assistant Preschool Teacher provides direct supervision to a group of children in the Enrichment Program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all children in the program and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall preschool experience. The Assistant Toddler Teacher provides direct supervision to a group of children in the Enrichment Program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all children in program and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall preschool experience.

Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree in ECE (preferred) and active Ed Tech III certification through Maine DOE.
  • Previous experience working with children, preferably in a childcare setting.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • State of Maine childcare provider background check.
  • CPR, first aid, AED certifications, and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Familiarity with the State of Maine Early Childhood Learning Guidelines, Creative Curriculum, and NAEYC Accreditation Standards.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A commitment to the field of early care and education.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Lead Teacher and works as a team to supervise a group of children.
  • Assists with lesson plan implementation and program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
