About The Position

The Engineering Services Department consists of three separate sections, Land Development, Project Delivery, and Transportation, with a total of twenty-six (26) staff members that span various roles. The City of Rancho Cucamonga is continuing to build a World Class Community. Engineering is integral to this mission, providing the built environment that shapes our lives. This Assistant Engineer position is part of the Project Delivery Team, which is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the City’s Major Projects Program (MPP). This includes the design, construction, and installation of various public improvements throughout the City, such as street improvements, storm drain construction, railroad crossing improvements, and facility construction or upgrades. The team also manages funding programs related to the MPP and other operational functions. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in project management while contributing to projects that improve the City's infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and two years of progressively responsible professional experience in Civil Engineering.
  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • A total of six (6) years of Civil Engineering experience or closely related field (as a substitution).
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices as applied to public works; related federal and state laws, ordinances and regulations; methods and techniques utilized in the preparation of public works projects, designs, and related plans, specifications and cost estimates; principles and methods utilized in surveying and material testing.
  • Ability to perform professional engineering work, including project design; conduct inspections and evaluate construction relative to approved plans and specifications; coordinate the work of others involved in related activities; prepare and maintain records and prepare reports; interpret and apply related laws, ordinances and regulations; use a personal computer and software related to specific assignments; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Pass a reference and background verification.
  • Provide proof of a valid California driver's license and be insurable.
  • Pass a pre-employment medical exam.
  • Complete a Degree Verification.
  • Complete a verification form designated by Immigration and Naturalization Service to certify that they are eligible for employment in the United States of America and furnish proof certifying legal authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing bid documents and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Assist with the delivery of Major Projects Program (MPP) projects from design through construction.
  • Participate in construction meetings and assist with contract administration.
  • Review contractor submittents, Requests for Information (RFIs), and change orders.
  • Respond to inquiries from residents, developers, and contractors.
  • Stay informed about required reporting for special funding sources, contract management and changes in codes or design techniques.
  • Work with other Departments, neighboring jurisdictions, and regional agencies to coordinate projects and grant applications to ensure the goals of the City are being met.
