About The Position

The East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Wastewater Process Engineering and Asset Management group is seeking an Assistant Engineer. This role involves completing tasks related to the optimization of treatment processes and the evaluation of innovative technologies at EBMUD’s Main Wastewater Treatment Plant. The successful candidate will conduct research for new or improved wastewater treatment processes, perform field and laboratory tests, and analyze engineering data. Responsibilities include troubleshooting process performance, recommending improvements, collaborating with vendors and consultants, assisting with compliance reports to meet regulations, and supporting projects related to process engineering. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of wastewater process engineering principles, experimental design, wastewater treatment plant operations, project management, wastewater process modeling, technical report writing, presentation delivery, regulatory issues, data analysis, automated control systems, and engineering economic analyses.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering curriculum accredited by ABET or a California Engineer in Training Certificate.
  • Two years of professional civil, electrical, mechanical, control systems, geotechnical, sanitary or structural engineering experience, at a level comparable to or higher than EBMUD’s Junior Engineer classification, after obtaining the education outlined above.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of wastewater process engineering principles (civil/chemical/environmental engineering, chemistry, microbiology, physics, hydraulics, etc.).
  • Knowledge of proper experimental design.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices (project budgeting, scope development, change management, etc.).
  • Knowledge of wastewater process modeling.
  • Knowledge of technical report writing.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting research to develop new or improved processes for wastewater treatment.
  • Conducting field/laboratory tests and measurements.
  • Performing calculations using collected and compiled engineering data.
  • Troubleshooting process performance issues.
  • Recommending process improvements or optimizations.
  • Working with vendors or consultants to obtain information necessary to complete evaluations.
  • Assisting the Wastewater Department with meeting regulations by helping with the preparation of compliance reports.
  • Collaborating with EBMUD personnel (including operators, mechanics, and technicians), other agencies, and contractors.
  • Assisting with projects related to process engineering or unit processes.
