About The Position

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is seeking 3 full-time Assistant Electrical Engineers to join the Bureau of Fire Prevention. This role is crucial for ensuring fire and life safety across the city by reviewing fire alarm plans, enforcing codes, and coordinating with various agencies. The Bureau of Fire Prevention works to prevent loss of life and property damage by identifying hazards, enforcing the NYC Fire Code, reviewing plans for critical systems, licensing companies, certifying individuals, and educating the public. This role involves collaboration with other bureaus and city agencies to maintain New York City as one of the safest big cities in the nation.

Requirements

• A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or
• A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
• A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering.
• A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.
• Candidates must be serving permanently in the civil service Assistant Electrical Engineer title or have taken and passed Exam #3108 or have filed for the upcoming Exam #7007.

Responsibilities

• Review fire alarm plans and documents and recommend approvals/disapprovals.
• Review fire alarm plan and document submissions, including fire alarm equipment reviews for Certificates of Approval and fire alarm plan examinations of proposed fire alarm systems for residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies.
• Research codes and standards, review fire alarm-related technical reports, and participate in technical meetings.
• Review technical proposals for fire alarm installations submitted by other city agencies and the fire alarm industry.
• Prepare written responses for plan and equipment review submissions.
• Assist in the development of technical guidelines for fire alarm equipment documentation submissions.
• Meet with city agencies, contractors, and expediters to discuss fire alarm installation submissions.
• Coordinate and perform inspections of fire alarm installations to determine project completion.
• Coordinate the plan review process with the Department of Buildings and other City and State Agencies.
