About The Position

Upper Canada Child Care, a non-profit licensed provider since 1983, operates over 85 centres in Toronto, York Region, and Simcoe County. They offer full-day and before and after school programs, summer camps, a forest school, and are guided by values of support, trust, safety, respect, and professionalism. The organization prioritizes play-based learning and outdoor exploration, investing in quality program delivery, specialized supports, and training. Their Ministry of Education licensed programs reflect the four foundations of learning. The Assistant Educator position aims to ensure operational and curriculum requirements are met in compliance with Ministry and organizational guidelines. It involves delivering a developmentally appropriate, play-based program by applying specialized skills and knowledge in early childhood education, and supporting the organization’s vision, mission, and guiding values. This is a fully in-centre position.

Requirements

  • A recent Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Health assessment and record of immunization, as outlined by legislation.
  • Up-to-date certification in CPR-C and Standard First Aid (training provided upon selection if required).
  • Basic knowledge of the developmental needs of children and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Uses initiative; applies sound reason in solving problems and resolves conflict in a calm, professional manner.
  • Proven ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively and establish appropriate relationships with families, coworkers and other professionals.
  • Have the physical and emotional stamina to effectively supervise children in a variety of settings including outdoor public spaces.
  • Ability to use computer systems and programs; including Dayforce, and Storypark.
  • Moderate level of physical effort is regularly required; including but not limited to kneeling, pushing, pulling, bending, and carrying.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with inquiry/play based program design and implementation, and with the use of pedagogical documentation an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Applies current legislative expectations to support a program that is consistent with Ministry of Education requirements and in accordance with Upper Canada Child Care’s program statement.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities, staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Engages with the children and provides a positive learning experience. Provides a range of care including assisting with meals/snacks, toileting, diapering, dressing, etc.
  • Fosters the engagement of and ongoing communication with parents about the program and their children.
  • Completes program charts, daily logs, reports, and other administration tasks as required.
  • Uses Storypark for pedagogical documentation as a guide for program development.
  • Effectively collaborates and communicates with other team members, school personnel, and outside agencies to help support the needs of all children.
  • Provides guidance to students and volunteers as needed.
  • Identifies children in need of additional support. Guides parents through the process of accessing resources. Helps design and implement individual support plans as required.
