About The Position

This is an unpaid volunteer position for an Assistant Editor. The role is flexible and virtual, offering hands-on experience while supporting ARO’s mission to help victims of abuse. The company is looking for individuals who enjoy collaborating with a global community of passionate advocates and are ready to grow, with opportunities for leadership, cross-departmental mentoring, and professional development. ARO focuses on championing 28 areas of abuse and offers various support services. At this time, ARO is only hiring female identifying volunteers due to their BFOQ policy.

Requirements

  • Availability to volunteer 8-10 hours per week for a minimum of 8-10 months.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with AI generation, Google Docs, Slack, and Asana
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of two years of editing experience required.
  • Must be based in the U.S., Canada, or neighboring countries within a time zone difference of no more than three hours.

Responsibilities

  • Write and Edit: Develop, refine, and revise articles for Medium, ensuring all blogs maintain a high standard of overall publication quality and accuracy.
  • Maintain Editorial Standards: Review all content to ensure strict adherence to guidelines for style, tone, clarity, formatting, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Repurpose Content: Craft engaging, concise summaries of long-form articles for use across various social media platforms.
  • Manage Visual Assets: Generate and source compelling images to accompany and enhance blog posts.
  • Supervise Journalists: Lead, guide, and collaborate with a team of journalists, reviewing their drafts and providing constructive feedback to support their progress.
  • Oversee Project Timelines: Manage editorial workflows by developing clear task descriptions within Asana and ensuring all deliverables are completed on schedule.
  • Report to Management: Communicate team progress, assigned task updates, and potential roadblocks directly to the Editorial Manager.
  • Deliver Department Updates: Compile editorial department updates for monthly company meetings (held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month).
  • Support Editorial Initiatives: Assist the Editorial Manager with ongoing projects, daily operations, and additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Monitor Industry Trends: Stay continuously informed on current trends, tools, and developments related to content creation and digital publishing.
  • Perform other related administrative or editorial duties as assigned.
