Assistant-level editors assist associate editors or editors/managers in chiefs. Specialized staff members include copy editors, video editors, audio editors, photo editors, web developers or multimedia editors. Students must demonstrate profiency in these areas in order to be considered for the position. Requirements

  • Effective communication skills, ability to critically evaluate information, and ability to respond to emails and phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated profiency in the area of interest
  • Must be a current Washburn University or Washburn Tech student with a flexible schedule to allow the student to commit to working a minimum of 10 hours each week.

Responsibilities

  • Copy editors must be available for 8-10 hours per week, two of which are training hours; they must also adhere to the Associated Style Pressbook, work closely with writers and editors to improve the overall clarity and readability of all copy for the print and online versions of the Washburn Review, the Kaw Yearbook and the Bod Magazine. They need to be assertive and innovative in finding ways for the organization to improve its content. It's essential for copy editors to be problem solvers.
  • Web Techs must be committed to keeping up with the updates/changes to the website provider and teaching members of the staff how to post content correctly. They will be responsible for making sure website projects are completed in a timely manner.
  • Video editors may also be called on to to shoot b-roll or other necessary video assignments and assist with script writing.
  • Audio editors will edit the podcast projects turned in from the classroom and/or members of the staff.
