About The Position

The Assistant Director of Student Government Engagement and Success (SGES) is the department’s primary resource for risk, financial, and policy compliance related to student government and more than 230 ASUO-recognized student organizations. The role provides leadership for staff supervision, student leader advising, and continuous improvement of departmental services. Reporting to the Director of SGES, the Assistant Director ensures that ASUO and recognized student organizations comply with university, state, and federal regulations, contributes to decisions about departmental programs and services, and assumes the Director’s responsibilities when needed. A central responsibility is compliance oversight, including interpreting and enforcing policy for student leaders, managing risk and event safety standards, overseeing records retention, and advising on the annual allocation process for approximately $11 million in Student Incidental Fees. The Assistant Director supervises the Financial Service Advisor, Senate Advisor, and student employees, and provides day-to-day leadership, advising, and problem-solving support to elected ASUO officers and student organization leaders. The position also designs assessment and communication strategies, tracks student organization participation trends to inform divisional policy, and partners with campus stakeholders to strengthen service models and the overall student experience. The role calls for sound judgment in policy interpretation and risk management, effective communication and relationship-building, program evaluation and data-informed decision-making, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. SGES coordinates operations, support, and continuity for the University of Oregon’s student government, the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO), and student leaders in ASUO-recognized organizations. ASUO’s legislative and executive branches recognize and serve over 230 organizations. ASUO officials recommend the allocation of approximately $11 million in mandatory Student Incidental Fees through an annual process requiring approval by the University President and Board of Trustees. The Division of Student Life supports the university’s academic mission and strategic plan through programs and services that promote student learning and success and foster an inclusive, vibrant campus community.
