About The Position

Serve as a vital member of the Housing and Residential Life Leadership team made up of four Assistant Directors and one Director. The team leads a mission and values driven organization serving an on-campus student population of approximately 5,000 students. The position includes developmental supervision of 4-6 full-time professional Residence Hall Directors. The Assistant Director is responsible for:, welcoming and inclusive community development, an educational curriculum supporting student academic success and retention, leadership development, student safety, and crisis management, and the well-being of students, Resident Assistants, and professional staff. In addition, assuming leadership for several department-wide responsibilities and decision-making for several budgets and key areas in the department.

Requirements

  • 2 years full-time work experience in Housing or Residential Life.
  • Master’s degree in higher education, Student Affairs or a related field
  • 3 years of supervisory experience in college residence halls
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development and organizational development theory.
  • Highly effective interpersonal communication skills in 1:1 and group settings, and as a presenter/trainer
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and ability to effectively communicate and connect with individuals with lived experiences different than their own.
  • Experience with Residential Curriculums and Assessment
  • Strong organizational, administrative, planning, analytic, problem solving and crisis management skills.
  • Excellent judgment and ability to handle challenging conversations with students, staff, collaborators, and student family members.
  • Ability to use basic computer software, including Microsoft office.

Nice To Haves

  • 4-5 years working in college residence halls
  • Demonstrated experience effectively training professional and student staff in multiple topic areas
  • Experience working with student conduct processes and procedures.
  • Experience with student information systems (StarRez, Maxient, etc.)
  • Experience running searches for professional and student staff.
  • Experience facilitating restorative and challenging dialogues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and ongoing weekly supervision, individualized ongoing professional development guidance and feedback, and performance review for 4-6 professional staff.
  • Review, analyze, and respond to information in relation to curriculum grids, student survey quantitative and qualitative data, student related reports, and duty reports.
  • Supervise 22 professional staff in specific job areas overseen by the Assistant Director.
  • Indirectly supervise up to 40 Resident Assistants.
  • Provide oversight, training, and direction for weekly group meetings with supervisees to discuss the residential life curriculum implementation strategies and ideas.
  • Oversee several department committees and develop expertise in the topic of overseen committees.
  • Develop data driven and best practice expertise in functional areas.
  • Solicit and be responsive to feedback to help foster a participative and productive work environment.
  • Develop goals, objectives, and assessment plans for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Recommend department policy and procedural changes.
  • Ensure all necessary reports and action steps have been taken in accordance with university policy and protocol.
  • Inspire all staff to embrace the department’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Work with central staff to assess, implement and continually evaluate our mission, vision and values.
  • Work with leadership team to assess, implement, and analyze our learning outcomes
  • Review and analyze information in relation to curriculum grids, survey data, conduct data, qualitative data, and student related reports.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development and engagement in activities on campus that connect students, staff, and faculty.
  • Develop and facilitate ongoing training for RHDs and RAs on a variety of topics.
  • Successfully collaborate with many campus partners to benefit the overall campus climate and student experience.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive and effective working relationships with multiple departments and organizations including professional and student organizations.
  • Participate as a member of divisional teams and committees and/or assume leadership of such teams as appropriate.
  • Be a reliable, positive representative of the department focusing on strengthening our services to students and staff.
  • Serve in on-call capacity for entire campus on weekly rotations.
  • As the on-call AD, consult with Residence Hall Directors on many issues: sexual misconduct, bias incidents, serious mental health and student behavior situations, and responding to parent concerns.
  • Demonstrate excellent judgment in responding to emergency situations.
  • Consult with other campus collaborators when necessary: Office of Community Standards, Civil Rights and Equity Office, UNH Police, Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP), Dean of Students and BIT case manager.
  • Assist Director in the development of department budget which exceeds 2 million dollars.
  • Assume direct responsibility for managing certain aspects within the department budget.
