About The Position

The University of Virginia School of Law seeks an Assistant Director of Student Affairs to join the Office of Student Affairs. This position reports to the Senior Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. The University of Virginia School of Law is consistently recognized as one of the top law schools in the country. The environment at the Law School is both active and supportive, with a strong sense of collegiality among students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to excellence and service and in-person experience. The Assistant Director will provide support for hallmark programs of the Student Affairs Office, including, but not limited to, the Roadmap Scholars Initiative, the Community Fellows Program, orientation, graduation and other events. In addition, the Assistant Director will manage and create social media posts and the weekly newsletter. The Assistant Director will also serve as a key point of contact for the Law School’s student organizations, which are a vibrant and central part of student life. Currently there are more than 70 student organizations which span academic, professional, cultural, social, and public service interests, alongside 10 academic journals and the Student Bar Association. Each spring, student organizations elect new leadership, and the Assistant Director plays a critical role in ensuring smooth transitions by orienting incoming leaders and serving as an ongoing resource on Law School policies and best practices in organizational leadership. The Assistant Director will also help coordinate student organization budgets, funding, and reimbursements, as well as serve as a primary point of contact. The position will require some weekend and evening work and the ability to travel domestically during the year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent written, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to counsel and advise student leaders on organizational management, Law School policies, and leadership best practices.
  • Ability to engage, develop relationships with, and influence a range of audiences, including prospective students, current students, student leaders, and alumni.
  • Ability to engage with individuals from different disciplines, academic ranks, educational levels, demographics, and institutional settings.
  • A collaborative work style and strong team orientation.
  • Excellent computer and database skills, with strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience advising or supporting student organizations or student leadership programs.
  • Experience providing academic or career counseling to undergraduate students.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and active and regular user of spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software.
  • Highly proficient in the use of Excel.
  • Ability to work well as a team member and independently with minimal to no supervision.
  • Knowledge of professional pipeline programs.
