About The Position

The Assistant Director of Orientation and Family Engagement directs the implementation of new student orientation and transition programs, including Week of Welcome, and supports the online orientation experience. This role collaborates with campus partners to deliver student-centered experiences and supervises student staff who support these initiatives. The Assistant Director also supports the implementation of Fall Weekend and commencement and contributes to departmental programs, communications, and cross-campus efforts that enhance student engagement and success. The assistant director is a 12-month, full-time, exempt position that reports to the Associate Director of Orientation and Family Engagement. This position is designated as an essential employee and may be required to report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather or other conditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience required.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours for multiple orientation and family engagement events and programs.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and identify solutions.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with a commitment to high quality results, along with follow-through with responsibilities and communications in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational skills, including effective time management and prioritization capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field.
  • Knowledgeable of trends in higher education related to orientation, student transition, and family engagement.
  • Awareness and understanding of the transitional needs of students and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the implementation of fall and spring new student orientation programs, including Week of Welcome, in collaboration with departmental leadership.
  • Coordinate with campus partners, including Registered Student Organizations, to support the implementation of student orientation programs.
  • Manage the online orientation process in collaboration with the Associate Director, including content updates, campus partner coordination, and student engagement initiatives such as virtual Q&A sessions.
  • Collaborate with and support the Office of Enrollment Management with initiatives focusing on prospective and admitted students, including coordinating participation in Admitted Students Days.
  • Recruit, select, train and supervise Week of Welcome leaders (WOW) who support all new student transition and Week of Welcome programs.
  • Select, train and supervise Week of Welcome interns, including operations and marketing roles.
  • Supervise the Graduate Communications Intern, including assigning projects, managing timelines, and supporting the development of communication materials across departmental programs.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of UTampa Fall Weekend events.
  • Support the implementation of December and May commencement ceremonies, including assisting with student registration processes, communication coordination, staffing, and on-site logistics.
  • Serve as an event lead during departmental programs and events, including commencement, orientation, Week of Welcome, and UTampa Fall Weekend, supporting event operations and the management of safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with departmental staff to support publications, websites, and electronic communications for Orientation and Family Engagement programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and Associate Director of Orientation and Family Engagement.
