About The Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is responsible for establishing and maintaining departmental procedures, assisting with the department budget, ordering supplies and equipment, and determining staffing requirements. This role involves recruitment, interviewing, and selection of personnel, as well as monitoring work hours, personnel, and assignments to ensure proper workflow and adequate staffing levels in compliance with state regulations. The ADON will evaluate, develop, mentor, coach, counsel, and discipline department staff, and support personnel from other departments. They will address issues of concern through courageous conversation and notify the department manager of any interactions requiring attention. Participation in community surveys and developing plans of correction for deficiencies are also key responsibilities. The ADON provides oversight for resident admissions, transfers, and discharges, and supports administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, and evaluations. They ensure the development of preliminary and comprehensive assessments of resident nursing needs, review treatments to ensure they align with care plans and wishes, and ensure nursing personnel comply with their job descriptions. The role involves meeting with staff to plan department services, monitoring adherence to policies and procedures, and attending committee meetings. The ADON assists in preparing reports on nursing service programs and activities, and supports the development and implementation of in-service training programs, ensuring continuing education requirements for licensed personnel are met. They monitor compliance and accuracy of documentation practices, respond to emergency situations, and ensure personnel participate in safety drills and follow infection control procedures. Maintaining clean, sanitary, and safe work areas, and assisting the Director of Nursing with Quality Assurance and Process Improvement, including incident reporting and analysis, are also crucial. The ADON ensures adequate stock of medications, supplies, and equipment, monitors efficient use of supplies to avoid waste, and ensures proper use of equipment. They participate in developing procedures for the safe operation of nursing equipment. The role requires independent functioning, decision-making, flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents and personnel. Reporting occupational exposures and maintaining a working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards are also required.

Requirements

  • Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university, or be a graduate of an approved RN program.
  • Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in this state.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Training and/or experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
  • 1 year experience in a supervisory capacity in a hospital, long-term care environment, or other related healthcare facility.
  • Must be able to see, hear and smell or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move and or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 3 ½ feet and be able to push, pull, move and or carry such weight a minimum distance of 10 feet.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile individuals within the community.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this community, which include a medical and physical examination.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing preferred (LPNs actively enrolled in a Registered Nurse program may be considered on an interim basis)
  • Previous experience working in long-term care or with the geriatric population preferred

Responsibilities

  • Establish and/or maintain departmental procedures that support the necessary operational functions for the Skilled Nursing Department.
  • Assist in maintaining the department budget, place orders for equipment and supplies as necessary.
  • Determine departmental staffing requirements and assist in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of personnel for the Community or Department.
  • Monitor department work hours (including vacation and holiday schedules), personnel, work assignments, etc., to ensure proper workflow and adequate staffing levels in compliance with state minimum regulations and sanctuary budgeted PPD hours.
  • Evaluate, develop, mentor, coach, counsel and discipline department staff.
  • Supports community personnel from other departments through coaching and mentoring to help achieve optimum standard of excellence.
  • Addresses issues of concern through courageous conversation and notifies department manager of any interactions requiring attention.
  • Participate in community surveys and when necessary develop a plan of correction for department deficiencies.
  • Provide oversight for the admission transfer and discharge residents as required.
  • Provide support for administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting etc., and activities.
  • Ensure the development of preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident.
  • Review resident’s medical and nursing treatments to ensure that they are provided in accordance with the resident’s care plan and wishes.
  • Ensure that all nursing personnel are in compliance with their respective job descriptions.
  • Meet with the nursing staff, as well as support personnel in planning the department’s services.
  • Monitor that all departmental personnel follow established policies and procedures, including dress code.
  • Attend various committee meetings of the community as required.
  • Assist in preparing written and/or oral reports of the nursing service programs and activities to submit to such committees.
  • Assist the Regional Directors of Learning and Development and Education Directors in developing, implementing, and conducting in-service training programs that relate to the nursing service department.
  • Ensure the continuing education requirements, which allow licensed personnel to keep their license current.
  • Monitors compliance and accuracy of IDT documentation practices in relation to the care of the resident.
  • Responds to emergency situations, gathers data pertinent to emergencies, takes appropriate action, and notifies appropriate parties.
  • Ensures that all personnel participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills and follows establish infection control procedures.
  • Ensure that department work areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary and safe manner.
  • Assists Director of Nursing and participates in the Quality Assurance and Process Improvement in relation to incident reporting to assure complete documentation of occurrences.
  • Analyzes data and develops appropriate action plans, identifies trends, patterns and outcomes.
  • Provides these plans and trends to various committees attended.
  • Ensure adequate stock of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on premises at all times to adequately meet the needs of the residents.
  • Monitor nursing procedures to ensure that nursing service supplies are used in an efficient manner to avoid waste.
  • Monitor that staff is using equipment properly.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the procedures for the safe operation of all nursing equipment.
  • Must function independently, make independent decisions, demonstrate flexibility, personal integrity and ability to work effectively with residents and personnel.
  • Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the community policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, THSC Corporate Integrity Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
