The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is responsible for establishing and maintaining departmental procedures, assisting with the department budget, ordering supplies and equipment, and determining staffing requirements. This role involves recruitment, interviewing, and selection of personnel, as well as monitoring work hours, personnel, and assignments to ensure proper workflow and adequate staffing levels in compliance with state regulations. The ADON will evaluate, develop, mentor, coach, counsel, and discipline department staff, and support personnel from other departments. They will address issues of concern through courageous conversation and notify the department manager of any interactions requiring attention. Participation in community surveys and developing plans of correction for deficiencies are also key responsibilities. The ADON provides oversight for resident admissions, transfers, and discharges, and supports administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, and evaluations. They ensure the development of preliminary and comprehensive assessments of resident nursing needs, review treatments to ensure they align with care plans and wishes, and ensure nursing personnel comply with their job descriptions. The role involves meeting with staff to plan department services, monitoring adherence to policies and procedures, and attending committee meetings. The ADON assists in preparing reports on nursing service programs and activities, and supports the development and implementation of in-service training programs, ensuring continuing education requirements for licensed personnel are met. They monitor compliance and accuracy of documentation practices, respond to emergency situations, and ensure personnel participate in safety drills and follow infection control procedures. Maintaining clean, sanitary, and safe work areas, and assisting the Director of Nursing with Quality Assurance and Process Improvement, including incident reporting and analysis, are also crucial. The ADON ensures adequate stock of medications, supplies, and equipment, monitors efficient use of supplies to avoid waste, and ensures proper use of equipment. They participate in developing procedures for the safe operation of nursing equipment. The role requires independent functioning, decision-making, flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents and personnel. Reporting occupational exposures and maintaining a working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards are also required.
