The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) defines the rolls and responsibilities of the position. The ADON assists the Director of Nursing in directing activities of licensed and non-licensed personnel who provide health care and nursing services to residents on a 24-hour, 7-day per week basis. This role involves assisting the DON in planning, developing, and supervising the activities of the nursing staff, as well as in the development and implementation of nursing services, objectives, policies, and procedures. The ADON works with the DON to recruit, hire, and train nursing staff, and assists with employee appraisals and problem resolution, including disciplinary action. The position acts as a backup for the DON, RN, and LVN staff and may be required to provide direct resident care as needed. The ADON oversees clinical operations, including daily rounds and monitoring resident conditions, and is responsible for ensuring resident safety and that residents are treated with the utmost respect. This role serves as a liaison between residents, family members, and physicians. The ADON attends and may conduct staff meetings if the DON is unavailable, and provides reports and recommendations to the DON concerning the operation of nursing services. Additionally, the ADON assists the DON in the design, implementation, and evaluation of nursing systems to ensure consistent delivery of care and to maintain and promote resident rights. The role also involves assisting the DON with conducting ongoing in-services for the nursing staff and maintaining confidentiality regarding residents and employees. The ADON must stay informed of regulatory changes and communicate them appropriately.
