About The Position

The Assistant Director of Development at the College of Arts and Sciences is a member of the CAS development team and is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and renewal of gifts to the school ($50,000+), identification of CAS major gift prospects, discovery visits in the DMV area, assistance with the planning and execution of strategic CAS development events, and logistical and administrative support. In addition, the Assistant Director may be called upon to assist with CAS-specific alumni relations activities, including but not limited to acknowledgements, invitations, and mailings. In all these capacities, the Assistant Director will be required to collaborate with colleagues in other schools and colleges, as well as members of the central development staff. The Assistant Director participates in overall Office of Development activities in support of the broader objectives in support of University Advancement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution required.
  • Two years or more years of experience in development or another like field (such as alumni relations, career services, event management, sales, marketing, public relations).
  • Proven track record of successful project management, strong customer/client support, or volunteer management.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in current online and social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and various email and e-communications strategies.
  • Maturity and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with fundraising systems and strong command of MS Office Suite of products.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for experience in a higher education environment.
  • Proven track record of successful project management, strong customer/client support, or volunteer management.

Responsibilities

  • Research and identify major gift prospects for Assistant Dean and directors and conduct discovery visits in the DMV region.
  • Develop programs and strategies to identify, prioritize, cultivate, and solicit key individual prospects.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean with travel for major development events/trips in the United States and abroad.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of 75 - 100 major gift prospects, consisting of alumni, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations and achieve personal goals for prospect cultivation (measured by number of visits and contacts), solicitation, and gift closure.
  • Oversee the stewardship efforts related to all donors who have contributed to American University's College of Arts and Sciences, including ongoing daily gifts from all variety of sources, as well as major gifts secured by the CAS Development Team.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean and directors with a broad range of functions, providing high-level logistical and administrative support to day-to-day operations, relevant events, board meetings, team documents, etc.to include collaboration with Assistant Dean and Directors with individual projects.
  • Assist in the fulfillment of all other development objectives to include collaboration with Assistant Dean and Directors with individual projects.
