The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. The Volunteer Services Coordinator III, Assistant Director of Community Relations and Volunteer Services, performs volunteer services work including organizing, directing, publicizing, and coordinating volunteer services activities. Works with local groups and stakeholders promoting the SSLC and services of individuals residing at the SSLC. Provides technical assistance to support skills development and increased independence of the individuals through their experiences with volunteers and in community settings. Assists with the development of educational and training materials and programmatic planning. Attends planned events and supports the department in furtherance of goals by speaking and educating the public. Ensures the best use of budget allocation by tracking and monitoring expenditures. Performs data entry to log activities and assists in preparing reports and develops training materials.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of community resources, organization and administration, general principles of public relations and community engagement strategies.
  • Knowledge of multiple nonprofit fundraising strategies.
  • Knowledge of volunteer tracking databases.
  • Ability to plan, promote and implement community service programs that support the facility.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively, for newspaper, radio and/or television.
  • Ability to work effectively with professional and non-professional staff within the facility.
  • Ability to work effectively with community leaders and organizations.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and make varied decisions within broad parameters.
  • Ability to work with facility mission and service/workplace values.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Skill in working with the general public and establishing/maintaining effective relationships with community leadership and local organizations.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and promoting volunteer programs.
  • Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of six months’ experience as a volunteer coordinator or community service liaison within an organization is required.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from accredited four-year college or university with a degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or English preferred.
  • Experience in the areas of fundraising, corporate development, special events planning and/or public information is preferred.
  • Work or volunteer experience with a non-profit with emphasis on volunteer management is preferred.
  • Experience writing recruitment plans, federal grants, or handling funds is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.
  • Interprets HHS and HSCS policy related to volunteer services activities and rules. Assists in educating staff and volunteers to ensure adherence to those policies, purpose, and programs to area communities through technical assistance, public engagements, the media, and onsite events.
  • Assists in the solicitation of contributions and donations to expand services and quality of program available for individuals residing at the SSLC. Provides support to the Volunteer Services Council and Family Association as a non-voting member as a resource when the Volunteer Services Coordinator IV is unavailable. Assists the Volunteer Services Council and Family Association in determining appropriate fundraisers. Researching funding opportunities which may include grants and community awards utilizing local business donations, various grants found on Grants.gov, GrantStation, Grant Watch and Philanthropy news digest and submitting those opportunities for leadership review.
  • Coordinates programs with SSLC staff and leadership for recruitment, selection, orientation, assignment for volunteers. Provides assistance with matching patient and clients' needs with volunteers' skills.
  • Maintains fiscal parameters established during event planning for expenditures and activities by maintaining expenditure logs, contributions obtained, and contributions expected or awarded. Prepares tracking mechanisms to prepare and create reports for all related volunteer services activities and events.
  • Performs special assignments as requested by leadership. Assists volunteers and staff while formulating and planning events.
  • Actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
