About The Position

The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine is seeking a full-time academic Clinical Chemist to join our exceptional faculty and serve as Assistant Director of the Laboratory Section of Clinical Chemistry. This is an open-rank faculty position. Rank and tenure will be commensurate with the candidate's experience, qualifications, and funding. The Department of Pathology includes the divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Transdisciplinary Pathology, Research, and Clinical Pathology which includes Clinical Chemistry, Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, HLA, Clinical Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics clinical laboratories. Faculty expertise supports strong clinical programs at UI Health in solid organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, neurology, gastroenterology, hematology and oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and more. Opportunities exist to participate and collaborate on clinical research. The Department hosts an ACGME accredited Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program and several ACGME accredited fellowship programs. The UIC Department of Pathology is among the country’s fastest-growing academic departments and is structured to provide a unique environment to foster the development of academic careers. In addition to providing medical education and diagnostic services for Clinical Chemistry, the successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a program in translational research at UIC. Fellowship training and significant experience in Clinical Chemistry is required for this position. Preference will be given to candidates with a track record of scholarly achievement.

Requirements

PhD, MD or DO degree
PhD degree holding candidates must possess board certification in Clinical Chemistry from the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.
MD or DO degree holding candidates must be certified in Chemical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or in Clinical Chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.
Fellowship training and significant experience in Clinical Chemistry is required for this position.
A high commitment to excellence in clinical service with outstanding communication skills is essential.

Responsibilities

Provide diagnostic services for Clinical Chemistry
Along with the Director of Clinical Chemistry: Ensure test systems provide quality service in all aspects of testing – preanalytic, analytic, and post-analytic
Ensure selection of quality test systems relevant to accuracy, precision, verification, and method selection
Develop and monitor quality measures with yearly plans to improve quality and efficiency
Ensure enrollment, participation, and return of Proficiency Testing
Ensure that quality control and quality assurance programs are established and maintained
Ensure that remedial actions are taken and documented
Ensure that an approved procedure, process and policy manuals are available and reviewed annually
Ensure that interpretative tests and consultation reports include all pertinent information
Assist in developing a working relationship with Clinical Service Units
Participate in management of critical testing and critical test reporting and monitoring
Provide medical education in Clinical Chemistry
Provide education to medical students, residents, fellows, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows
Monitor and assist colleagues and subordinates in the preparation and presentation of appropriate intramural and extramural lectures and conferences
Participate in appropriate continue education programs such as in-service lectures for laboratory employees or medical staff
Establish and maintain a program in translational research at UIC
Actively participate in basic, translational and/or clinical research or investigative pursuits, including but not limited to, clinical informatics, clinical trials involving patients, new instrumentation or innovative testing methodologies, etc.
Collaborate in and cooperate with ongoing Departmental or inter-departmental research projects in the College of Medicine, other UI Colleges of School and/or external academic institutions.
Actively mentor and involve medical students, residents and fellows in research
Perform other tasks as assigned by Clinical Pathology leadership to support departmental goals.
