About The Position

The Nutrition & Food Service Assistant Director of Employee Services supports the Nutrition & Food Service Director – Employee Services in managing employee relations, workforce engagement, and labor compliance within the food service department. Reporting directly to the Director, this role focuses on promoting positive labor relationships, consistent application of policies, effective communication, and compliance with employment laws and organizational standards. The Assistant Director serves as a trusted partner to the Director in fostering a respectful, productive, and high-performing work environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience in upper management positions, required
  • Food service experience with a school district comparable to Katy ISD or a position with similar work responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of employment laws, workplace policies, and employee relations best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of senior leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to present material to diverse audiences and facilitate meetings.
  • Ability to motivate and engage personnel across varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree with major emphasis on foods, nutrition and/or food service management, Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a related field, preferred
  • Food Service Manager certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support the Associate Director of Employee Services in administering employee relations programs, policies, and practices across the department.
  • Manage onboarding and orientation to clarify expectations and departmental standards.
  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate all NFS school and catering/concessions Coordinators and Field Specialists.
  • Provide support with the implementation of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Texas Department of Agriculture policies and regulations.
  • Serve as a point of contact for staff concerns, workplace issues, and conflict resolution, escalating matters to the Associate Director of Employee Services as appropriate.
  • Assist with investigation of employee relations matters, including grievances, complaints, attendance issues, and policy violations, under the Associate Director of Employee Services guidance.
  • Promote fairness, consistency, and transparency in the application of departmental rules and procedures.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with organizational policies, employment laws, collective bargaining agreements, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support training and communication efforts related to employee policies, workplace conduct, attendance, and performance expectations.
  • Search for quality applicants, set-up and conduct phone and/or in person interviews for NFS positions.
  • Collaborate with HR in hiring applicants for all NFS positions.
  • Support promotion, recognition, and training initiatives that reinforce respectful, compliant workplace practices; and communicate updates, procedural changes, and expectations to staff in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assist supervisors and managers with performance management processes, including coaching, documentation, and corrective action consistent with policy.
  • Participate in district auxiliary job fairs in addition to other staff recruiting opportunities.
  • Assist with processing work orders for equipment repair and modification.
  • Assist with employee payroll processing; time detail reports, extra duty reports, audit reports, staff information, TCP absences.
  • Assist with processing Facility Use Requests, staffing and communicating with customer regarding needs of scheduled events.
  • Attend workshops, in service training, meetings and seminars to keep abreast of current research and information pertaining to federal child nutrition programs.
  • Adhere to an established work schedule with regular attendance.
  • Work additional hours and/or days to meet departmental needs or function.
  • Assume additional duties as assigned.
