About The Position

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) coordinates services and programs that challenge, motivate, and support all students in their personal, academic, and leadership development at the University of Miami. We strive to create opportunities that encourage dialogue, understanding, and respect among the campus community. Through initiatives that explore community, and shared human experiences, MSA works to foster a welcoming environment where students feel supported, heard, and empowered to succeed and contribute to a vibrant university life. The assistant director is responsible for programmatic support to office programs and student organizations. The assistant director will report to the Director of Multicultural Student Affairs. The department serves as an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs and Student Life and works closely with the William R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement, Student Activities and Student Organizations, and the LGBTQ Student Center.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressive related experience in Higher Education or related field.
  • Master’s degree in higher education or higher preferred.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of concepts related to college student development, identity development, and intersectional approaches to identity.
  • Experience working with college students in a programmatic and advisory capacity.
  • Experience with developing and implementing goals, learning outcomes and assessment programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships on a college campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the director in developing positive working relationships with members of the University community and external community.
  • Work collaboratively with academic units and student affairs departments to develop and coordinate resources, programs, and activities for current and prospective multicultural students at the University of Miami.
  • Develop, implement, and assess innovative programs, services, and activities, which support and promote the mission of Multicultural Student Affairs.
  • Develop innovative leadership and belonging workshops, dialogues, and training opportunities for student leaders, student affairs professionals, student organizations, and academic units.
  • Assist director in evaluating the effectiveness of programs and service offerings.
  • Work collaboratively with student affairs and student organizations to collect, organize, and analyze office utilization and data impact.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to 12 student organizations.
  • Co-advise MSA Crew and Unity Roundtable Consortium.
  • Maintain records, and correspondence and develop a positive mentor relationship with students.
  • Provide guidance and assist in coordinating programming initiatives.
  • Provide support and counsel students experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties.
  • Assist students in becoming more connected to university resources.
  • Coordinate programs and services associated with cultural celebrations.
  • Assist department in supporting programs from cultural student organizations including Multicultural Student Council, Asian Student Leadership Council, MSA Crew, Black Awareness Month Committee, Canes Fiesta, Black Student Leadership Caucus, Miami Dream Day, Committee, Filipino American Heritage Month, and Native American Heritage Month.
  • Advise and coordinate retention efforts with Beyond the Horizons mentorship program for first-year students.
  • Assist students in planning monthly events surrounding academic resources, involvement, community, and college success strategies.
  • Advise, train, and coordinate Champions for Change program for students to facilitate culture of belonging workshops on campus.
  • Assist with large scale office programs such as Horizons pre-orientation program, Senior Mwambo Celebration, MSA Alumni Bash and other initiatives as they are developed and created.
  • Co-Advise Office of Multicultural Student Affairs programming Initiatives “Enough” and The Huddle” by advising the student committee and discovering monthly events that relate to students experience on campus.
  • Manage departmental social media presence and publications including the Unity newsletter, publications, departmental brochures, and annual report.
  • Manage departmental survey assessment tools and collect monthly utilization data.
  • Assist the director and administrative assistant in managing student organization and signature program budgets totaling over $320,000.
  • Serve as a resource to the University of Miami community on initiatives relating to issues of belonging and multiculturalism.
  • Serve on various advisory boards and University committees.
  • Assist in supervising (1) graduate student assistant, (1) graduate practicum student, and (5-10) student assistants.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as identified and assigned by the Director of Multicultural Student Affairs.

Benefits

  • Base Salary Range is $55,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience.
