About The Position

We’re looking for a creative, strategic, and highly collaborative marketing professional to join our External Relations team as Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications. In this role, you’ll lead impactful campaigns and communication initiatives that elevate the School of Medicine’s mission, strengthen engagement with key audiences, and tell meaningful stories that inspire students, faculty, donors, and community partners. Working closely with the Managing Director of External Relations, you’ll help drive high-quality marketing and communications projects from concept to delivery—bringing ideas to life across multiple platforms and audiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in Communications, Business, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field; or equivalent.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of managing a team.
  • Direct experience in marketing and strategic communications.
  • Strong leadership, strategic communication, marketing and planning, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead creative, technical, and administrative teams.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and visual communication abilities.
  • Experience developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies.
  • Strong understanding of digital media including social media platforms, web platforms, and analytics.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong project planning and management skills.
  • Native level proficiency in English both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of accessibility laws (ADA) for digital and print media.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MBA or Master’s in Communications, Marketing, or related degree) or equivalent.
  • 8-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in all essential function areas (marketing, communications, branding, leadership).
  • Higher education background (preferably academic medicine).
  • Familiarity with FERPA, GDPR, and data privacy best practices.
  • Knowledge of branding and visual identity management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the branding and communications of the School of Medicine: Facilitation of brand implementation, Maintain and implement brand guidelines for the School of Medicine to ensure cohesion within the broader BYU community, Train faculty and staff on brand compliance and ensure it is carried out within the School of Medicine.
  • Communications implementation and workflow management: Develop and maintain the School of Medicine website in coordination with departments, web designers, and ensure alignment to BYU brand standards, Establish workflows that ensure accuracy, appropriate messaging, and timely launch/publication, Work with the Managing Director of External Relations and the Dean to produce press releases and other official statements, Develop promotional items and newsletters with the School of Medicine’s Office of Admissions, Provide input for regular reports to the Dean regarding strategic messaging and project timelines to align communications efforts with School of Medicine priorities.
  • Faculty and staff communications strategy: Coordinate with appropriate offices to ensure faculty and staff messaging via newsletters, digital signage, and other communication channels, Ensure faculty and staff receive timely updates on policy changes, funding, events, and opportunities, Manage School of Medicine ad-hoc internal communications, as needed.
  • Liaison and external representation: Serve as the School of Medicine liaison to the university communications team, BYU Brand & Creative, and the university copyright office, ensuring compliance with all university communications policies, Work with the Managing Director of External Relations to evaluate and coordinate official responses to external media, including those by faculty and staff, in coordination with university communications, May help with building design and aesthetics for the future School of Medicine building and temporary education space.
  • Compliance and inclusivity: Oversee compliance with accessibility laws (ADA) in websites, digital media, and other communications, Ensure that all School of Medicine communications reflect the diversity of our student population.
  • Manage marketing to various stakeholders through digital and print platforms: Marketing implementation, Manage the planning and execution of the School of Medicine’s marketing initiatives—consistent with our mission—to enhance outcomes in admissions, employment, fundraising, and other purposes, Manages and executes digital marketing strategies through social media platforms, digital signage, and marketing materials with engaging, accurate, and accessible content for a variety of audiences, Track placement of stories on all media platforms, including local, national, and international media, Design and/or provide direction to partners/vendors for print and online advertising, Negotiate media buys and associated contracts, Oversee and create event-specific marketing materials (e.g. banners, brochures, swag items, etc.), Supervise image/asset management for digital and print communications, Develop and report key metrics to leadership that evaluate the impact of marketing initiatives.
  • Create positive connections with alumni and medical society membership: Develop multiple channels for regular communication with the medical society and alumni, Coordinate with the BYU Alumni Association to organize outreach and advancement activities, Execute delivery of alumni and medical society publications and evaluate feedback, Contribute messaging and materials for alumni and donor events.
  • Supervise Marketing and Communications team and ensure effective operations through production schedules and workflow management: Supervise student editors, writers, social media specialists, and videographers/photographers, as hired.
  • Manage and foster an exceptional experiential learning workplace: Direct a School of Medicine marketing and communications team that provides superior digital and physical content, Foster an exceptional learning experience for student employees under the university mission of experiential learning, Utilize best practices for experiential learning reflection, Create and maintain production schedules and teamwork schedules to ensure smooth operations, Train office student team on workflows, production tracking, and file maintenance.
