About The Position

The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is seeking an Assistant Director of Marketing and Resident Selection to help eligible New Yorkers secure affordable housing. UHAB’s Marketing and Resident Selection program is in a moment of significant growth; the Assistant Director will play a key role in helping to meet the new demands for UHAB’s work in this space and shape the direction of the program. About UHAB UHAB empowers low- to moderate-income residents to take control of their housing and enhance communities by creating strong tenant associations and lasting affordable co-ops. Since 1973, UHAB has helped form hundreds of tenant associations and transformed troubled rental buildings into 1,200 affordable co-ops, providing homeownership opportunities for over 25,000 families. With democratic community control at the core of our mission, we work to sustain this thriving affordable housing community for this generation and those to come. We organize residents to be active participants and decision-makers in shaping their neighborhoods. UHAB’s programs address a full spectrum of affordable housing needs: from building resident power and organizing tenants as community leaders, to developing thousands of units of affordable housing across the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, to making loans to first-time homeowners, to preserving affordable co-ops through training, education, and technical assistance. UHAB’s programs address the needs of future generations through long-term solutions: developing new affordable co-ops, increasing energy efficiency and introducing renewable technologies, and strengthening housing policy. At UHAB, we’re more than a housing nonprofit, we’re a movement for economic justice and community empowerment. We offer a supportive, values-driven workplace where your work makes a tangible impact on people’s lives. Position The Assistant Director is responsible for helping eligible New Yorkers to secure affordable homeownership and rental opportunities across NYC. The AD’s role will involve a mix of directly managing projects through the marketing process and supervising Resident Selection Coordinators and/or consultants in this work. The AD will process and/or oversee Resident Selection Coordinators in processing the housing applications of people seeking an apartment through the City’s Housing Connect website and will interface with cooperatives who are seeking to fill vacancies to fulfill their compliance requirements. The position also involves working with lenders and housing counseling agencies to get applicants over the finish line to purchase their homes. The ideal candidate must be detail oriented in their review of applicant files but also should enjoy connecting directly with applicants to explain the housing programs and the eligibility process. The Assistant Director will apply the City’s rules for applicant eligibility diligently and consistently and train UHAB’s Resident Selection Coordinators in this work. The ideal candidate will come into the role with a comprehensive understanding of applicant selection rules as well as affordable housing programs.
