About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of ESOL, provides leadership, supervision, and coordination for a dynamic team of students and educators in HCC’s ESOL Pathways portfolio, an outcomes-based set of programs that support adult English learners in achieving their language, career, and academic goals through offerings such as Accelerated Career English, ESOL for Employment, and ESOL Healthcare trainings. Recognizing the strengths our students bring from prior educational, workplace, and lived experiences as well as the adversity faced by many immigrants, refugees, and other English learners as they reestablish their lives in a new context, we strive to provide the highest quality of English language instruction and advising that is contextualized to career exploration, pathways, and US workplace systems and cultures, culturally-responsive, and builds mutually-supportive communities within and across cohorts. In partnership with the Director of ESOL Initiatives, the Assistant Director is responsible for managing day-to-day operations of day and evening programming, including outreach, program development, outcome reporting, curriculum development, and program evaluation, as well as for supervising staff providing in-person and remote services at multiple program sites in Hampden County. Provides leadership and operational management for ESOL Pathways programs to comply with contract or grant requirements and meet or exceed program targets (eg enrollment, completion, credential attainment, and postsecondary education and employment outcomes), in alignment with college, regional, and state priorities and opportunities. Provides direct supervision for staff of ESOL Pathways programs, with primary focus on Accelerated Career English (ACE). Develops core partnerships and programming with Upwardly Global and African Bridge Network. Fosters program culture and structures that lead to a cohesive, integrated approach to instruction and advising, in which all staff are committed to student success, aware of student goals, and are knowledgeable about systems, tools, and strategies for language development, intercultural communication, exploration of skills, values, and locally-relevant opportunities, as well as navigation of workforce training and college pathways. Designs and facilitates program and staff development. Identifies opportunities for, and collaboratively facilitates process improvement throughout all elements of ESOL Pathways programming. Builds relationships for outreach and referral with Adult Education providers, refugee resettlement organizations, and other community-based programs and groups in Massachusetts. Manages screening and enrollment process. Strengthens connections to support services for students including referrals to appropriate agencies (educational, training, employment, etc.), support for basic needs, and connection with campus services including the Office of Students with Disabilities/Deaf Services, THRIVE, Transition to College & Careers, Workforce Development, Academic ESL, El Centro, Marieb Adult Learner Success Center, ALANA, etc.. Builds deep knowledge of non-credit and credit pathways at HCC, to provide skillful navigation support to participants, applicants, and community members. Ensures accurate data entry (LACES), documentation, and maintenance of confidential student data. Provides, collects, and analyzes evaluation forms completed by students. Collaboratively conceives of and implements program improvements in response to participant feedback and goals, funder priorities, employer feedback, and new opportunities. Creates and implements best practice models of high-quality ESOL and workforce programs which can be replicated and sustained at HCC. Provides oversight for ESOL Pathways contract and program budgets, including compiling quarterly invoices. Creates and monitors Purchase Orders and other expenditures in relation to grant activities, in compliance with funder guidelines and regulations. Works flexible hours to include some evenings. Collaborates effectively with a diverse team, community partners, and student body. Supports ESOL-wide and Division-wide projects and initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree
  • Four (4) years of experience in ESOL program coordination, instruction, or advising, preferably with adult immigrants/refugees
  • Experience building culturally-responsive educational spaces where all students can succeed
  • Knowledge of career pathways for immigrants and refugees
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body
  • Awareness of community resources for referral
  • Strong skills in writing, communication, and technology (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Database Management)

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Adult Education or ESOL, or TESOL Certification
  • Bilingual (in a language significantly represented in program’s student body)
  • Previous experience coordinating or managing DESE grants and programs
  • Proposal development, grants management, and budget management experience
  • Experience using a work management platform such as Monday.com
  • Expertise in Universal Design for Learning, instructional design, non-credit to credit pathways, workforce development, or other areas relevant to the role
