About The Position

The Assistant Director/Associate Director of Sports Medicine provides comprehensive athletic training services for assigned NCAA Division I student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play management. This position delivers medical coverage for practices, competitions, and team travel; coordinates care with team physicians and allied healthcare providers; and promotes student-athlete health, safety, and wellness through evidence-based clinical practice. In addition to direct patient care, the position contributes to departmental operations through emergency management planning, policy development, medical documentation oversight, interdisciplinary collaboration, and staff and student mentorship. The successful candidate will support the mission of the Sports Medicine Department by fostering a culture of safety, performance, and holistic student-athlete well-being. Appointment at the Assistant Director or Associate Director level will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated leadership in collegiate sports medicine.

Requirements

  • Assistant Director: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area and four (4) years of appropriate experience; OR Master's Degree in a relevant area and two (2) years of appropriate experience.
  • Associate Director: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area and six (6) years of collegiate experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer; OR Master's Degree in a relevant area and four (4) years of collegiate experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • BOC Certification
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
  • Tennessee Athletic Training Licensure (or eligibility within 90 days)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to perform injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures and concussion management protocols.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate medical records and communicating clinical information effectively.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic modality treatments
  • Knowledge of preventative taping and/or bracing
  • Ability and knowledge to design and perform rehabilitation exercise programs
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with athletes, coaches, physicians, and staff.
  • Must be able to comply with all Athletic Department, University, Board of Trustees, NCAA, and Athletic conference policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform injury and illness prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation for assigned student-athletes.
  • Provide on-site medical coverage for practices, competitions, training sessions, and team travel.
  • Design and implement rehabilitation programs.
  • Apply preventive taping, bracing, and protective equipment.
  • Administer therapeutic modalities and manual interventions.
  • Maintain medical documentation in accordance with NCAA, HIPAA, and institutional standards.
  • Coordinate care with team physicians and specialists.
  • Coordinate transportation for medical appointments and diagnostic testing.
  • Educate student-athletes and staff on injury prevention and risk management.
  • Coordinate communication regarding medical evaluations, treatment plans, and return-to-play decisions.
  • Assist with nutritional and mental health referrals and follow-up.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary wellness and performance initiatives.
  • Assist with inventory management, medical equipment maintenance, and EMR administration.
  • Participate in policy review and updates.
  • Serve on the Pre-existing Injury Review Committee.
  • Maintain required certifications and licensure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assist with supervision and evaluation of Athletic Training Fellows (Assistant Director).
  • Mentor assigned athletic trainers, fellows, students, and student assistants (Assistant Director).
  • Assist with fellow education curriculum delivery (Assistant Director).
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of sports medicine staff (Assistant Director).
  • Assist with emergency management operations, EAP reviews, emergency equipment compliance, and record maintenance (Assistant Director).
  • Participate in senior staff initiatives and department projects (Assistant Director).
  • Supervise and conduct performance evaluations of Athletic Training Fellows (Associate Director).
  • Lead delivery of the athletic training fellow education curriculum (Associate Director).
  • Provide leadership in recruitment, hiring, and onboarding efforts (Associate Director).
  • Co-coordinate emergency management operations, annual reviews, EAP development, and post-incident assessments (Associate Director).
  • Manage CPR certification tracking and compliance (Associate Director).
  • Collaborate on budget oversight for medical equipment and supplies (Associate Director).
  • Serve as a senior-level contributor to departmental strategic initiatives and wellness programming (Associate Director).
