About The Position

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at ASU is currently home to about 60 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, 60 instructional faculty, 10 postdoctoral associates, 190 graduate students, 1400 undergraduate student majors, and 20 staff members. The School teaches courses to over 20,000 undergraduate students each academic year. SoMSS recently started a new undergraduate degree program in data science. The School also offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in applied mathematics, mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education, as well as undergraduate and masters programs in actuarial science. SoMSS has a strong interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering. The Assistant Director Academic Services is responsible for the management of personnel in the SoMSS academic support offices, including staff recruitment, hiring, training, and development. This role supervises a team of undergraduate academic advisors, graduate coordinators, a course scheduler and data specialist, and a front desk administrator. The position is also responsible for oversight and support of data requests and analysis, advising, time approvals, student support hiring, academic scheduling, room requests, textbook requests, and overrides. The Assistant Director ensures the accuracy of information available online and in-person related to SoMSS undergraduate and graduate programs in the ASU catalog, Major Maps, Program Architecture Tool, and the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS). They utilize the Analytics website for reporting and serve as a resource to the SoMSS and ASU community regarding academic policy and procedures. Additionally, this role provides primary administrative support for the math placement assessment (ALEKS) and serves as a liaison to communicate policies and procedures related to mathematics courses and the ASU math placement test. The Assistant Director also assists faculty on academic curriculum development and program assessment, and works closely with the SoMSS leadership team to ensure program goals are met regarding recruitment, retention, and course management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a related field, AND four (4) years’ experience in one or more of the following: advising, recruitment/retention, or other related student services in a college/university environment, which includes two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices related to academic advising, recruitment/retention, and/or other student support functions.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for management of personnel in the SoMSS academic support offices including staff recruitment, hiring, training, and development.
  • Supervises a team of undergraduate academic advisors, graduate coordinators, a course scheduler and data specialist, and front desk administrator.
  • Responsible for oversight and support of data requests and analysis, advising, time approvals, student support hiring, academic scheduling, room requests, textbook requests, and overrides.
  • Responsible for accuracy of information available online and in-person related to SoMSS undergraduate and graduate programs in the ASU catalog, Major Maps, Program Architecture Tool, as well as the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS).
  • Utilizes Analytics website for standard and ad-hoc academic reporting such as: eAdvisor off-track reporting, Academic Status Reports, Prerequisite Purge, End-of-Term Grade Reports, and Applied to Graduate lists using university systems including: PeopleSoft, DARS, Salesforce, and E2E.
  • Serve as resource to SoMSS and ASU community regarding academic policy and procedures; provide training support to new hires and TAs; and ensure availability of information in the online faculty handbook and send out at start- and end-of-term.
  • Provide primary administrative support for the math placement assessment (ALEKS)
  • Serve as liaison to the ASU community to communicate policies and procedures related to mathematics courses and the ASU math placement test.
  • Provide regular updates to the advising community through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Council of Academic Advisors, and New Student Orientation Programs, as well as maintain accuracy of information on the ASU websites related to first-year math and placement test.
  • Coordinates and processes MAT 117S grade changes, and math related instructor-initiated administrative drops and academic record changes for the ASU community.
  • Assists faculty on academic curriculum development and program assessment.
  • Work closely with SoMSS leadership team to ensure program goals are being met regarding recruitment, retention, course management: provide direct assistance with yearly program review and serve on internal committees (Scholarship and Awards Committee, Payroll Committee, and SoMSS Events).

Benefits

  • Salary Range: $68,000-$78,000 DOE
