About The Position

WAVY-TV 10 and WAVY.com are seeking an innovative, audience-focused Assistant Digital Manager to help lead our digital news operation. This leadership role serves as the Digital Manager's primary partner in executing a digital-first content strategy that grows audience, strengthens engagement, and reinforces WAVY's position as Hampton Roads' leading local news source. The Assistant Digital Manager will oversee the daily execution of digital news coverage across WAVY.com, mobile platforms, social media channels, streaming products, newsletters, and emerging digital platforms. This position plays a key role in supervising the digital team, mentoring staff, and ensuring the newsroom consistently delivers timely, compelling, and accurate journalism across all digital platforms. Working closely with the Digital Manager, News Director, and newsroom leadership, the Assistant Digital Manager will help drive innovation, audience growth, and operational excellence while serving as the editorial lead for the digital desk during assigned shifts and in the Digital Manager's absence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Three to five years of professional digital journalism or television newsroom experience.
  • Exceptional news judgment with the ability to make fast editorial decisions in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Expert knowledge of AP Style.
  • Strong understanding of SEO, audience development, digital analytics, and social media strategy.
  • Experience using content management systems, social publishing tools, and video editing platforms.
  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced newsroom.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during breaking news and severe weather coverage.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience leading projects, mentoring colleagues, or supervising newsroom staff preferred.
  • Television newsroom experience.
  • Experience with Chartbeat, Google Analytics, or other audience measurement tools.
  • Familiarity with push alert strategy, newsletters, live streaming, and short-form video production.
  • Demonstrated success growing digital audiences and increasing engagement.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring newsroom employees.

Responsibilities

  • Help lead the daily digital news operation, ensuring timely, accurate, engaging, and compelling coverage across all digital platforms.
  • Serve as the day-to-day editorial leader for the digital desk during assigned shifts and when the Digital Manager is unavailable.
  • Supervise, mentor, coach, and support Digital Content Producers while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
  • Assist with scheduling, workflow management, onboarding, and performance feedback for digital staff.
  • Coordinate daily digital coverage with newsroom managers, assignment editors, reporters, photographers, producers, and meteorologists.
  • Champion a digital-first newsroom culture by identifying opportunities for exclusive digital reporting, enterprise storytelling, and audience engagement.
  • Monitor breaking news and make real-time editorial decisions regarding story placement, push alerts, live blogs, social coverage, and streaming content.
  • Write, edit, and publish stories, headlines, videos, graphics, and social content that meet the highest journalistic standards.
  • Develop compelling headlines and optimize content using SEO best practices to maximize audience reach.
  • Monitor digital analytics, audience trends, and platform performance to help inform editorial strategy and identify growth opportunities.
  • Assist in developing and executing social media strategies that expand audience engagement and strengthen the station's digital brand.
  • Coordinate live digital coverage during breaking news, severe weather, elections, and major community events.
  • Ensure all digital content adheres to AP Style, journalistic ethics, copyright standards, legal guidelines, and Nexstar standards.
  • Collaborate with television producers to extend broadcast content across digital platforms while identifying stories that should originate online first.
  • Help train newsroom employees on digital best practices, CMS workflows, SEO, social media strategy, and emerging storytelling tools.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, audience behaviors, and new technologies to continuously improve the station's digital products.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Partner with the Digital Manager to execute the station's digital strategy and daily operational priorities.
  • Assist with onboarding, coaching, and developing members of the digital team.
  • Help establish newsroom digital standards, workflows, and best practices.
  • Support performance evaluations and employee development initiatives.
  • Provide leadership during breaking news and major weather events, ensuring seamless coordination between broadcast, digital, and social platforms.
  • Recommend new initiatives that improve audience growth, workflow efficiency, and newsroom collaboration.
  • Serve as acting Digital Manager when assigned.
