About The Position

This is an internal agency opportunity for current DJJ employees only. The Assistant Detention Center Superintendent II - SES is responsible for supervising, directing, monitoring, and motivating employees to maintain and enhance established responsibilities. This role involves planning and coordinating workload, deadlines, and schedules, as well as coordinating and providing training. The position requires monitoring and ensuring compliance with state regulations, employee handbook, facility operating procedures, circuit procedures, and all applicable rules, regulations, and policies. The Assistant Detention Center Superintendent II - SES is also responsible for completing and reviewing all required incident reports and other written documentation, evaluating employee performance, conducting investigations, and recommending disciplinary actions. In the absence of the Detention Superintendent, this role ensures the facility operates effectively and administrative paperwork is completed in a timely manner. The position requires maintaining knowledge of fire evaluation procedures, providing employee contact information updates, and immediately notifying the Detention Superintendent of any arrests or allegations of abuse or neglect investigations. Additionally, the role involves conducting daily reviews of new admissions to identify youth appropriately or illegally detained, advocating for youth release or less restrictive detention, appearing in court when necessary, and serving as chairperson of the weekly detention review committee. The position also requires identifying cases needing immediate attention, problem-solving, interpreting and monitoring administrative and programmatic policies, completing and submitting reports, conducting conferences with employees, securing vendor estimates, maintaining supply inventories, assisting in facility security, and attending required training. A key aspect of the role is maintaining liaison with judicial, law enforcement, school officials, civic groups, and social agencies serving delinquent youth. Performs other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures and procedures for the care, custody and control of youth.

  • Knowledge of good housekeeping tasks relating to maintaining the sanitary conditions of the facility.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records relating to the supervision of youth.

  • Ability to observe changes in youth’s behavior.
  • Skill in recognizing signs of potential suicide or depression.
  • Skill in addressing issues of youth who are experiencing problems.
  • Skill in performing searches.
  • Be at least 19 years of age.
  • Be a high school graduate or its equivalent as determined by the department.
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Any person, who after September 30, 1999, pleads guilty or no lo contendere to or is found guilty of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement is not eligible for employment, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
  • Notwithstanding this subparagraph, any person who plead no lo contendere to a misdemeanor involving a false statement before October 1, 1999, and who has had such record of that plea sealed or expunged is not ineligible for employment for that reason.
  • Abide by all provisions of s. 985.644 (1), regarding fingerprinting and background investigations and other screening requirements for personnel.
  • Execute and submit to the department an affidavit-of-application form, adopted by the department, attesting to his or her compliance with sub paragraphs 1-4. The affidavit must be executed under oath and constitutes an official statement under s. 837.06.
  • The affidavit must include conspicuous language that the intentional false execution of the affidavit constitutes a misdemeanor of the second degree.
  • The employing agency shall retain the affidavit.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, monitor and motivate employees to maintain and enhance established responsibilities.

  • In the absence of the Detention Superintendent, ensure that the facility operates effectively, and various administrative paperwork is completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of fire evaluation procedures to ensure compliance and proper evaluation.
  • Provide current address and telephone numbers on employees within 72 hours of change.
  • Immediately notify the Detention Superintendent of any arrests or any allegations of abuse or neglect investigations.
  • Conduct daily review of new admissions to secure detention, home detention/non-secure detention to identify youth appropriately or illegally detained.
  • Advocate for youth in instances where it is apparent that youth should be released from detention program or placed in less restrictive form of detention, pending appearance in court.
  • Appear in court when necessary on behalf of youth detained and not detained.
  • Serve as chairperson of the weekly detention review committee.
  • Identification of cases requiring immediate attention; follow up and update detention log based on unit reporting.
  • Problem solving whenever appropriate.
  • Interpret and monitor administrative and programmatic policies to ensure compliance with established procedures in the employee handbook, facility operating procedures and all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Complete and submit administrative and programmatic reports within established time frames including, but not limited to, incident report, corrective action plans, work related injuries, fiscal and personnel.
  • Conduct regular and special conferences with employees to provide guidance and technical assistance in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Secure estimates from vendors related to repairs and replacement of equipment.
  • Maintain general supply inventories for ordering supplies for the facility.
  • Assist in maintaining facility security and providing technical assistance to subordinate employees.
  • Attend minimum of 40 hours supervisory approved training each review period and other training as assigned and/or required.
  • Maintain liaison with judicial, law enforcement, school officials, civic groups and social agencies, which provide services to delinquent youth.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.
