About The Position

The Assistant Dean of Preclinical Education collaborates with others to shape the preclinical curricular experience for RVUCOM. This position is responsible for creating processes, managing, and improving the student, faculty and staff experience in the preclinical curricular domain. This position collaborates with the Assistant Dean of Preclinical Curriculum Management and reports to the Associate Dean of Preclinical Curriculum and Assessment. Responsibilities will include planning and implementing curriculum and student assessment strategies that help ensure excellent outcomes in the RVUCOM preclinical education program. Direct communication relationships include the COM Course Directors, Office of Testing, Clinical Education, and the DO Curriculum Committee Chair. Direct reports include the Directors of Preclinical Education (DPCEs).

Requirements

  • Shall possess a terminal degree (DO, MD, PhD, EdD)
  • At least three (3) years of experience in medical education
  • Demonstrations of professional involvement and leadership
  • Demonstrations of scholarly activity, research, service to public or profession
  • Ability to travel
  • Demonstrate reliable time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail in written and spoken communications
  • Ability to perform duties independently with supervision as needed
  • Ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to negotiate effectively
  • Knowledge of University and College Policy and Procedures
  • Knowledge of the Clinical Education Preceptor Manual
  • Knowledge of student services and activities

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience in a medical school
  • Well known and reputable in the medical education community
  • At least Five (5) years of experience in medical education
  • Demonstrations of professional involvement and leadership in medical education organizations

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate an active and consistent commitment to the mission of Rocky Vista University and its College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships faculty, staff, and students in Utah and Colorado in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Preclinical Program Assessment
  • Manage and coordinate faculty and course directors to create a unified and cohesive curriculum
  • Lead and manage the Preclinical Capstone courses and help prepare students for COMLEX Level 1 and USMLE Step 1 preparedness
  • Maintain a high level of communication and collaboration with the Department of Clinical Education to ensure cohesive and integrated educational experience through years 1-4
  • Develop the policies and procedures for the preclinical education of RVUCOM students
  • Assist in the development of the preclinical curriculum
  • Possess the ability to deliver and assess student performance of the preclinical curriculum of the COM
  • Ensure the delivery and continuous evaluation and improvement of the preclinical curriculum.
  • Work with faculty and administration to implement the integration of clinical knowledge and skills, biomedical sciences and osteopathic principles and practices throughout pre-doctoral education to advance RVUCOM students’ professionalism, knowledge, skills, and competencies to the level required for osteopathic graduate medical education
  • Assist in the evaluation of need-based purchases for the preclinical education department, including support for educational and audio-visual resources, travel, teaching and research resources, and any other related products
  • Assure the advancement and integration of high standards for ethical and professional behavior in all aspects for RVUCOM and personnel
  • Participate in institutional and COM service as designated by the Associate Dean of Preclinical Education
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Preclinical Education
  • Assist the Faculty and Administrators with special project assignments
  • Promote a high reputation of RVU and its COM campuses
  • Participate in media and public relations activities to further the mission of RVUCOM
