About The Position

The Charleston School of Law seeks applications for a full-time Assistant Dean of Academic and Bar Success. This role is responsible for preparing and teaching a set curriculum for academic and bar success, including orientation and courses such as Academic Skills (1L), Foundations of Legal Practice (2L), and Bar Preparation (3L). The Assistant Dean will grade and provide feedback to students, offer post-graduate bar support and programming, and assist students facing academic challenges. This position also involves providing leadership in curriculum adaptation, supervising academic support staff and faculty, collaborating with administration to enhance student success and bar passage, and serving on the Dean's Executive Leadership Team.

Requirements

  • A Juris Doctor degree is required.
  • Bar licensure (active or inactive) in a U.S. jurisdiction is required.
  • Experience working with law students in academic support, bar preparation, teaching, or a closely related field is required.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a demonstrated commitment to student success are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Leadership or supervisory experience is preferred (experience supervising academic support personnel is a plus, but not required).
  • Experience teaching or designing courses related to academic success, legal skills, or bar preparation is preferred.
  • Familiarity with bar exam developments, including the NextGen bar exam, is preferred.
  • Experience using student performance or outcomes data to inform program improvements and decision-making is preferred.
  • Familiarity with relevant ABA standards is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach a set curriculum for academic and bar success, including orientation and a combination of some of the following courses: Academic Skills (a 1L course), Foundations of Legal Practice (a 2L course that focuses on the MPT and career-focused skills), and Bar Preparation (a 3L course).
  • Grade and provide feedback to students.
  • Provide post-graduate bar support and programming, which includes supplemental workshops and one-on-one meetings with graduates as necessary.
  • Meet with and assist students on academic probation, who are at-risk, or who otherwise seek assistance with success in law school.
  • Provide leadership in adapting curriculum and academic success initiatives in light of evolving student needs and changes to the bar exam, including the NextGen bar exam.
  • Supervise academic support professionals, adjunct professors, and student fellows.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to enhance student success and bar passage outcomes.
  • Serve on the Dean's Executive Leadership Team.
