About The Position

The Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University is seeking a dedicated Assistant Dean, Career & Student Services to shape the recruitment, development, and career launch of future public service leaders. This role involves guiding the entire student pathway, from attracting exceptional graduate students to equipping them with the necessary skills, experiences, and networks for success in public service. The Assistant Dean will lead a team across admissions, career services, student development, and leadership programming, ensuring a cohesive and impactful student experience. This leadership position collaborates closely with academic leadership, including department heads and associate deans, and partners with staff across different locations. The role requires operational excellence and a vision for evolving the student experience, while also cultivating external partnerships with employers, alumni, and public service organizations. This position is for an individual deeply committed to public service who wishes to influence the broader pipeline of leaders in the field.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in field appropriate to position responsibilities.
• Six years’ experience in career services, student affairs, recruiting, admissions, human resource development/adult education, public administration, and/or international affairs.
• Familiarity with word processing, data management and analysis, and presentation software.

• Experience in an academic setting, including proven experience with graduate student career services, student services, alumni services or recruitment and retention.

• Strong problem solving, diplomacy, communication (both oral and written), executive and leadership coaching/advising, organizational, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
• Knowledge of academic programs and student support services.
• Knowledge of student development, career services, alumni affairs, experiential learning, curricular programming, and student organizations.
• Ability to develop, direct, deliver and assess student academic and support services including presentations to prospective, current, and former students, as well as state and national audiences in associated career fields.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall strategic guidance, direction, and support for the enhancement of school-wide admissions and recruitment, career services, leadership development, and student services.
• Prepare annual budget, establish and evaluate program goals and objectives, and hire and supervise support staff, including professional staff, graduate assistants and student workers.
• Engage in senior-level management meetings, discussions, and partnerships to ensure Bush School student service programs are in line with overall school initiatives.
• Represent student services to administration and senior level staff within the School, University, and the broader field of public service and international affairs.
• Update faculty, administration, and other stakeholders on student service activities.
• Assess and evaluate student services programs on an ongoing basis, including but not limited to collecting, maintaining, and reporting accurate statistical information on recruiting and admission goals, student internships and post-graduate employment, and student engagement.
• Manage and oversee the recruiting and admissions process for in-residence graduate students to include supervising the Director of Admissions & Recruiting and develop strategic recruitment and admissions plans to meet graduate enrollment goals.
• Support collaboration and coordination for admissions and recruiting with Washington, DC and on-line programs.
• Serve as the graduate-level Scholarship Administrator for graduate scholarship awarding and university reporting requirements.
• Manage and oversee graduate career services offered to students for internship and job search support to include supervising Assistant Directors of Employer Relations and Career Programming, respectively, and serve as a liaison to the Texas A&M University Career Center for undergraduate career services.
• Support the development of career and student programming that crosses modalities and locations.
• Manage and oversee the Public Service Leadership program offered to students to include supervising the Assistant Director of Leadership.
• Develop and manage, in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, and Master of International Affairs, Master of Public Service & Administration, and Political Science department heads, student internship policies and procedures to provide internship certification, to include student evaluation and assessment, employer evaluation and assessment, internship and language training funding, and other related issues.
• Provide leadership for developing and delivering programs and services related to graduate recruiting and admissions, career services and experiential education, and student development.
• Oversee and manage student organization advising and guideline development for Bush School-affiliated organizations.
• Provide leadership for developing and delivering programs and services related to student development, career services, and experiential education, including but not limited to: Managing the Assistant Director for Employer Relations to develop an outreach program to establish and maintain relationships with hiring managers, administrators, and supervisors of former Bush School students and of organizations that are of particular interest to Bush School students to facilitate students internship and employment searches.
• Managing the Assistant Director for Career Programs to develop career workshops, training, and resources to students.
• Overseeing the internship and language immersion workshop attendance tracking and funding application process to include working with the Assistant Dean for Finance & Operations and the Student Financial Aid Office to provide internship/immersion funding to Master’s degree students.
• Manage the Assistant Director for the Public Service Leadership Program to plan and implement student services events and projects, including but not limited to leadership for new student orientation and participating in student recruiting and admissions projects, interview conferences, among others.
• Developing and coordinating effective programs and workshops in cooperation with other Bush School and University departments and offices including, but not limited to, the Bush School Undergraduate Programs, The Bush School Departments of International Affairs, Public Service & Administration, and Political Science, the Office of Extended Education, Bush School-DC, the Texas A&M Office of Graduate & Professional Studies, Texas A&M University Scholarships & Financial Aid, the Texas A&M University Career Center, Texas A&M Student Life, and Texas A&M Student Activities.
• Serving as a liaison for Bush School faculty and administrative personnel to maintain a high level of cooperation between student life and academics.
• Collaborating with the school Alumni Services and Development Office to track alumni first-destination employment information, maintaining the alumni jobs listserv, and completing other tasks as necessary to use alumni as mentors to students and keeping alumni connected to the School and Texas A&M University for career services purposes.
• Serving as a liaison to various campus offices, The Association of Former Students, Texas A&M Graduate & Professional School, Texas A&M Civil Rights Office, Texas A&M Public Policy Internship Program, Texas A&M Student Activities, Texas A&M Career Center, Texas A&M Counseling and Psychological Services, and other relevant parties regarding Bush School student services.
• Working with all parties to develop programs that will benefit current and former students.
• Representing the Bush School on external committees including but not limited to the Texas A&M Career Center Advisory Council and the Graduate and Professional School.
• Working with administrators and staff across the Bush School to strategically develop staffing plans and position descriptions for new staff positions.
• Serving on Bush School committees (both standing and ad hoc) as necessary and appropriate.
• Overseeing, in conjunction with the Texas A&M Graduate & Professional School, graduate student dispute resolution activities and programs for the Bush School.
• Providing career advising and general counseling to enrolled students.
• Serving on university committees as needed and appropriate.
