Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Must be licensed to practice law by the State of Colorado and in good standing.
  • Minimum of three (3) years in the active practice of law with broad contract and civil litigation experience. (An exceptionally demonstrated ability to perform these tasks based on unique clerkship, education, or specialized experience may be considered if under 3 years).
  • Skilled in legal tech platforms (Westlaw) alongside standard professional tools (Google Workspace/MS Office).

  • Prior experience in local government or municipal law.
  • A strong foundation in local government law and experience providing direct counsel to public boards, authorities, or commissions.
  • Adaptability: The ability to pivot between a fast-approaching courtroom deadline and a complex contract review without losing focus.
  • Communication: Exceptional presentation skills and the ability to translate dense, complex legal topics into clear, actionable advice for non-attorney county leaders.
  • Collaborative Judgment: A track record of making objective, well-reasoned decisions while building strong, professional relationships across departments.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate claims against the County, assist in preparing and trying cases, manage the litigation calendar, and assist with representation of the Board of Equalization in property tax appeals at all levels.
  • Draft, review, and revise contracts, resolutions, deeds, leases, easements, and covenants for various County departments to ensure legal acceptability.
  • Assist in advising department management, staff, and appointed boards on statutory requirements, local government authority, and evolving questions of law.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and draft clear, well-reasoned memoranda, briefs, pleadings, and formal legal opinions on pressing county issues.
  • Review and coordinate organizational responses to public records requests under the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA).
