About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for the role of Assistant Corporation Counsel - Legal Research within the Office of the Mayor, Corporation Counsel division. This position is based at the Municipal Center East, 800 East Monroe, Springfield, Illinois. The role involves advising City Council Members on legal matters, representing the City and its employees in litigation, assigning duties to support staff, conducting legal training, and performing research for City departments.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Valid license to practice law in the State of Illinois
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities

Responsibilities

  • Advise Springfield City Council Members on an “on-call” basis, including areas such as ordinances, statutes, and case law interpretation and application.
  • Represent the City and its employees in litigation, focusing on motion practice, discovery, expert witnesses, trials, and appeals.
  • Assign duties to secretaries and paralegals as needed.
  • Perform periodic training to City Council Members in pertinent areas of law, such as the Open Meetings Act and FOIA.
  • Perform research and advise City departments on a variety of legal issues.
