About The Position

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, with over 125 years of service, offers 160-plus programs and services. The Older Adult Centers focus on promoting an active life for seniors, assisting them in preserving independence and health through various activities and services. These include meals, health screenings, social services, educational workshops, exercise classes, discussion groups, games, art classes, lectures, organized outings, and special events. The Assistant Cook supports the Cook in preparing and distributing congregate meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and properly storing food items while adhering to DOH and funding source regulations. This role ensures food is stored and served at the correct temperature according to NYC DOHMH regulations and is responsible for kitchen inventory and supplies.

Requirements

  • Valid Food Handler’s Protection Certificate.
  • Previous experience in a commercial kitchen preferred.
  • Able to prepare nutritious and appealing meals.
  • Able to operate independently in the Cook’s absence.
  • Able to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or equivalency preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals under the guidance of the Cook.
  • Clean and maintain kitchen area and related equipment.
  • Maintain sanitary and safety procedures in kitchen and dining areas.
  • Serve food and ensure proper portion control in accordance to USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the New York City Food Standards and DFTA guidelines to seniors adhering to NYC DOHMH regulations for food service establishments.
  • In the absence of the Cook, assume responsibility in oversee and maintain the food related areas and equipment in accordance to according to NYC DOHMH Article 81.
  • Oversee safe handling and temperature control of prepared foods.
  • Receive, date and store all food items.
  • Inspect all food deliveries for freshness and correct amount ordered.
  • Develop meals recipes and introduce to seniors, work on nutritional brochures with cooking recipes, conduct culinary classes.
