About The Position

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for supporting multiple facilities within an assigned region/territory. This role carries a broad base of financial management oversight responsibility, including general accounting, financial reporting, journal entry preparation, account reconciliation, franchise fee reporting, and variance, trend, productivity, and profitability analyses. As a business partner and liaison between Corporate Finance/Accounting, this role plays a critical function in ensuring the well-being of the region's businesses in close partnership with business leaders. Applied financial, accounting, and economic skills will be used to evaluate operating data, detect business trends, and accurately prepare financial statements that comply with industry practices, regulatory requirements, and accounting principles. Other duties include budget development, budget forecasting, collections, process improvement, data management, franchise fee evaluation, asset management, proforma development, and merger/acquisition involvement.

Requirements

  • BS, BA or BBA Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration.
  • Minimum of 8 years progressive accounting/financial management experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years direct finance/accounting experience within the Waste Industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Ability to manage complex and dynamic situations requiring a well-developed sense of strategic and tactical priorities.
  • High degree of autonomy, yet team oriented with ability to work cross-functionally within a matrix organization.
  • Proven analytical, negotiation, and implementation skills.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Applied familiarity with financial/accounting/HRIS software packages/systems (e.g. DSL-Solomon, Dossier, Tower, SAP, Great Plains, PeopleSoft, Ceridian).
  • Familiarity and use of Crystal reporting, FRx report writing, ERP tools.
  • Demonstrated uncompromising personal integrity and ethics.

  • Solid project management, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel 50% primarily within defined geographic territory.

Responsibilities

  • Helping direct the financial affairs of the region in connection with regional business leaders, controller, and other corporate leaders.
  • Managing monthly accounting close, financial reporting, analysis, allocation methodologies, and general accounting activities.
  • Consulting with RVP, Regional Controllers, and managers in business areas that affect financial performance, including costs, pricing, margin analysis, bad debt review, capital expenditure, reporting, and measurement.
  • Performing timely and insightful analyses (e.g., AR Aging Analysis) and appraising management regarding operating results in terms of costs, budgets, trends, variances, profit improvements, and cost reductions.
  • Analyzing trends and deviations (actual performance to budget plan), monitoring spending, cash flow, and ROI, and recommending course correction to enhance profitability as needed.
  • Ensuring compliance in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, corporate finance policies & procedures, internal control processes, and established finance reporting requirements.
  • Coordinating the preparation, consolidation, and analysis of financial data for periodic and annual financial statements at the regional level, including preparation of charts/graphs showing progress against results.
  • Scheduling, organizing, and implementing the annual budget process; overseeing the maintenance of annual operating and capital budgets to plan.
  • Providing tax, insurance, and other reports required by governmental regulations.
  • Reviewing, developing, analyzing, and interpreting financial and budgetary reports, and presenting them to the management team for review, decision-making, and action.
  • Providing for accurate accounting and consolidation of regional revenues, expenditures, assets, and inventory.
  • Actively using financial/accounting automation tools (e.g., Solomon, Dossier) to prepare, maintain, derive, and share data.
  • Developing and consolidating short and long-term plans for operating/capital budgets, business plans, expense forecasting, manpower plans, cost controls, and fixed asset controls for the region.
  • Selecting, evaluating, and coaching direct reports to ensure dependable and efficient operation of the function.
  • Ensuring integrity of transaction reporting to the general ledger and reconciliation of balance sheets on a monthly basis.
  • Helping communicate with external auditors on accounting/financial matters and handling audit responses as dictated to comply with recommendations and related control matters.
  • Directly handling and/or coordinating activities for a broad range of functions including transaction processing (AR, AP, Payroll), financial reporting, general accounting, fixed assets, tax, LOB statements, risk management, budgeting, financial systems.
  • Supporting regional/divisional sales efforts by providing insightful profitability, proforma, pricing analyses along with quantitative packaging in support of RFP responses.
  • Playing an active role in merger/acquisition due diligence, data management, proforma development, and post-closing integration.
  • Identifying and implementing cost reduction and profit improvement strategies.
  • Attending and participating in corporation-sponsored training courses as assigned.
  • Keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by Waste Pro USA.
  • Performing any additional job duties that may be assigned by the Supervisor.
