About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Controller, the Assistant Controller role serves as the "right hand" to the Senior Controller, leading day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy of the financial books and records, assisting in the preparation of monthly financial reporting, maintaining compliance with GAAP and internal controls, managing income and sales tax compliance, and coordinating the annual financial statement audit. Successful candidates thrive in fast-paced environments and are comfortable with rapid and frequent change. They can think and communicate at a strategic level while maintaining an appropriate focus on the details. They can concisely and precisely provide and / or present financial information cross functionally, including to senior leadership. They model resilience when faced with something new, complex or challenging and help motivate their teams to accomplish their goals. The Assistant Controller has 2 direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation is required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong technical accounting experience, including prior experience managing complex and / or judgmental accounting issues, such as revenue recognition, contract cost accounting, inventory costing and valuation, accounts receivable valuation, and business combinations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Salesforce experience
  • Experience with ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Sedona.
  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex financial data to non-finance team members.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities effectively in a fast paced, highly collaborative environment.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's degree (MBA) is preferred, but not required.
  • Public accounting experience strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience in a direct to consumer subscription or SaaS business is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly general ledger close process, including review of account reconciliations, journal entries, and accounting analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of the monthly financial statements.
  • Support the analysis of the monthly financial results vs budget / forecast.
  • Maintain and monitor internal control policies to safeguard assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain cross departmental communication to ensure accurate and reliable data enters accounting systems.
  • Implement and maintain sustainable and efficient processes for tracking inventory movement and maintaining inventory costing in coordination with the Fulfillment team.
  • Support the coordination and management of the annual financial statement audit, including acting as a liaison for external auditors, and preparing necessary schedules and documentation for year-end audits.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate accounting staff to ensure productivity, efficiency, thoroughness, and accuracy.
  • Identify inefficiencies in financial workflows and implement procedures to increase efficiencies.
