About The Position

The Morgan Library & Museum (“the Morgan”) invites applications for the position of Assistant Controller in the Financial Services Department. Reporting to the Controller, the position will play a critical role in the integrity and accuracy of the Morgan Library & Museum’s financial operations. This position is responsible for day-to-day, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting functions in a non-profit fund accounting environment, with particular emphasis on overseeing the operating accounts. Responsibilities include preparing general ledger entries, actively participating in the annual audit process, assisting with the monthly closing schedule, and where possible working with the Controller in maintaining and reporting on restricted funds, endowment, and investment balances. This position works extensively with other members of the Finance team and collaboratively with staff from a wide range of other Morgan departments. An ideal candidate will have experience and passion for process improvement, implementing and leveraging new technology, and improving internal controls.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP
  • Experience with monthly close and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting nonprofit audits.
  • Ability to supervise staff while remaining hands-on in accounting work
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Skill in financial analysis and reporting.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced skill with Microsoft Office Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software, MIP Abila preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in both written and verbal form.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to allocate time efficiently.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience with increasing scope and responsibility in an endowment-supported nonprofit organization is required.
  • Experience with regulatory and government filings including IRS Form 990, 1099, 1042, and NY State Sales tax
  • Hands-on experience with investment journal entries, audits, and fund accounting.

  • Experience in public accounting a plus.
