About The Position

Executive Council works to ensure effective strategic planning and coordinated policy development and communications across government, engages Albertans and the broader global community, and promotes a vibrant and innovative public service. In addition to policy, protocol, communications and Cabinet functions, Executive Council includes Communications and Public Engagement (CPE). CPE is the Government of Alberta's full-service communications, public relations and marketing division. Its mandate is to enhance communications between Albertans and the Government of Alberta. CPE’s expert staff provide specialized services across the spectrum of communications including writing, social media, media relations, event coordination, issues management, crisis communications, digital communications, advertising, marketing, graphic design, public engagement and translation services. The department staffs the communications branches in all ministries of government along with a central operations department.

Requirements

  • A degree in a related field, such as communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, English, supplemented by four years of related communications experience.
  • Progressively responsible management experience including coaching, developing, and leading teams.
  • Equivalencies: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Responsibilities

  • The day-to-day planning and supervision of staff and activities within the communications branch, including coordinating and monitoring how people, processes and products are developing.
  • Act as the Director of Communications in their absence.
  • Help the Director to plan, develop, deliver and monitor communications projects.
  • Ensure standards are met and products are of high quality.
  • Resolve problems that interfere with excellence in information and operations.
  • Lead and advise when consulting, writing and editing.
  • Coordinate cross-ministry initiatives.
  • Provide solid issues management advice and guidance.
  • Manage or direct media relations activities.
  • Align resources with the goals of program areas, the ministry and the Government of Alberta.
