About The Position

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking an Assistant Commissioner of Communications to help guide and execute its 'Trash Revolution' initiative, a significant overhaul of its operations aimed at engaging all New Yorkers as partners. This role reports to the Deputy Commissioner for Public Affairs & Customer Experience and involves substantial interaction with senior agency leadership. The Assistant Commissioner will manage DSNY's public profile, ensuring successful public engagement for the 'New Era for NYC' initiatives.

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college in Public Administration, Personnel Administration, Business Administration, Human Services, Political Science or a related field, plus three years of satisfactory experience of a nature to qualify for the duties and responsibilities of the position, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position; or
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and five years of satisfactory experience of a nature to qualify for the duties and responsibilities of the position, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine years of satisfactory, full-time progressively responsible experience as described in '1' above, 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Manage DSNY's highly visible public profile through long-term strategic communications planning and direct execution of day-to-day customer-facing communications.
  • Develop and implement communications plans using social/digital, in-person engagement, and traditional media.
  • Provide key support and oversight to the existing press team, managing incoming press requests and developing proactive press strategies.
  • Brief and prep agency leadership for media or other public events.
  • Manage special projects related to agency priorities.
  • Oversee an experienced and specialized staff.
