About The Position

The Assistant Coach (Secondary) reports to the Program Head Coach and supervises student athletes. The role requires leadership in player and staff development, integrity, sportsmanship, and character development. Qualified candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills, with exceptional knowledge of their sport's skills and strategies as they pertain to New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) policies.

Requirements

Valid [state] coach certification.
Has the ability to assist in organization and supervision of the total sports program.
The assistant coach must have knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and willingness to continue to learn and examine new ideas pertinent to the assigned sport.
Certification: NFHS First Aid, Health and Safety; NFHS Bullying; NFHS Protecting students from abuse; NFHS Concussion in sports; CPR/AED certification; NFHS Football tackling (football applicants only) on file.
External candidate must have satisfactory background check. Non-refundable fee.
Valid Driver’s License.
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a vehicle, traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, and effective communication skills.
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
Review and implement cleaning and disinfecting guidelines recommended by CDC: Environmental Cleaning & Disinfecting for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas aka MRSA.
Educate athletes about ways to prevent spreading infections.
Multimedia equipment, including current technology.
Equipment/Materials relevant to job responsibilities.
Motor vehicle, if necessary defensive driving certification.
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature and air quality.
Work interruptions.
Flexibility.
Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.
Must complete applications and assignments within the timeframes allowed (complete responsibilities in a timely manner).
Extended work hours, on occasion.

Employment as a teacher in school district.
Previous high school coaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist in implementing written team rules, including a philosophy statement, acceptable player behavior, practice procedures, and substance abuse policies. Conduct pre-season meetings with parents and players to share these policies.
Possess a thorough knowledge of all District and NMAA Policies and be responsible for their implementation.
Understand and follow the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels.
Continue professional growth by attending classes, clinics, workshops, and affiliations with professional organizations.
Conduct oneself as a positive role model.
Assist the head coach in implementing all team rules.
Turn in team rosters as directed to the head coach.
Report all rule violations or suspected violations to the head coach.
Consult with the Head Coach, or his/her designee, in matters of purchasing equipment, scheduling, and coaching assignments.
Work to develop a positive athlete-teacher relationship.
Ensure that all athletes participating in their sport are academically eligible by checking grades before and during the season.
Assist in implementing a sport-specific safety plan, including a hazards-free practice environment. Report any necessary repairs immediately.
Be responsible for the collection of equipment and have athletic fines resolved by the end of the season.
Prepare travel rosters and itineraries prior to 24 hours of departure.
Remain at practice or contest until all athletes have left the athletic area.
Inspect locker room with the visiting coach before and after contest.
Ride the team bus to and from practices or contests.
Require appropriate behavior on road trips by supervising students in motels and restaurants.
Promote and encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, and ethical standards of conduct both on and off the field.
Forewarn all participants that involvement in physical confrontation could result in removal from game and/or suspension from subsequent games.
Maintain a yearly inventory of all new and used equipment.
Comply with all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, Public Education Department guidelines and local/state/federal laws and the NMAA.
Upload athlete rosters into NMAA approved database.
Perform additional job responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by being present at all practices, games, and while traveling.
Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
Complete reports of all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit to the athletic office within 24 hours.
Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when discipline enforcement is necessary, and contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
Maintain confidentiality, both verbally and in written form, of each student's record, as well as coaches' information and athletic personnel.
