About The Position

Bowling Green City Schools is seeking qualified and enthusiastic candidates for Assistant Coach positions within the district's interscholastic athletic programs. The Assistant Coach will support the Head Coach in providing a positive, safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate athletic experience for student-athletes. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills and will work collaboratively with student-athletes, coaches, school staff, families, and the Athletic Department.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the assigned sport and its rules, fundamentals, and appropriate coaching techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with, motivate, encourage, and supervise student-athletes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive professional relationships with students, families, coaches, staff, administrators, officials, and community members.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach, assistant coaches, athletic department, and school staff.
  • Ability to appropriately supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, meetings, and other program activities.
  • Ability to comply with district policies, applicable athletic association requirements, and federal and state laws.
  • Valid driver's license if required for assigned coaching-related transportation duties.
  • Prior to beginning coaching duties, the successful candidate must meet all applicable Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW), Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), and Bowling Green City Schools requirements for coaches, including required pupil activity credentials/validation and training.
  • The successful candidate must also maintain any required CPR/AED and first aid certification and complete all required district background checks and other pre-employment requirements before beginning service, as applicable.
  • All required credentials and certifications must remain current throughout the coaching assignment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport.
  • Previous experience working with middle school or high school student-athletes.
  • Ohio teaching license or other appropriate Ohio educator credential.
  • Experience working in an interscholastic or youth athletic program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices, scrimmages, and competitions.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to student-athletes in the fundamentals, skills, strategies, and rules of the assigned sport.
  • Support the development of student-athletes' athletic skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and personal responsibility.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive team environment.
  • Assist with the supervision of student-athletes during practices, competitions, meetings, travel, and other program activities.
  • Monitor and promote appropriate student-athlete behavior and enforce applicable district policies, athletic department expectations, and the Co-Curricular Code of Conduct.
  • Promote sportsmanship, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and respect consistent with district expectations and applicable athletic association requirements.
  • Assist with the prevention and appropriate response to athletic injuries and follow district and athletic department safety procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining, organizing, inventorying, and properly caring for athletic equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with the preparation and appropriate use of athletic facilities for practices and competitions.
  • Assist the Head Coach with maintaining accurate records, statistics, participation information, and other required documentation.
  • Attend required coaches' meetings, rules meetings, training, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Communicate professionally and appropriately with student-athletes, families, coaches, teachers, administrators, officials, and community members.
  • Support student-athletes in balancing athletic participation with academic responsibilities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and comply with applicable federal and state privacy requirements and district policies.
  • Support the overall interscholastic athletic program and cooperate with the Athletic Director and other coaches.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and/or Principal.
