About The Position

Durham Academy is seeking an Assistant Coach for Lincoln-Douglas Debate to prepare students for competitive debate, enhance their communication and critical thinking skills. This role involves working closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Speech and Debate to facilitate practice sessions, provide feedback, travel to competitions, and foster a supportive learning environment. The ideal candidate will be local to the Raleigh-Durham area, eager to build student relationships, open to innovative coaching, culturally competent, and possess expertise in communication skills and competitive debate experience. Coaching experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in running Upper School Speech & Debate practices for Lincoln-Douglas Debate
  • Work after school to coordinate practices and support competitive students
  • Chaperone and judge at Speech & Debate competitions on weekends to support our competitive students
  • Provide weekly office hours with students to prepare for upcoming competitions on the local, regional, and national level
  • Provide detailed feedback and suggestions for improvement during practice sessions and competitions, and empower students to refine their performances.
  • Guide students in mastering essential public speaking techniques such as delivery, articulation, and body language through engaging practice activities.
