About The Position

Durham Academy is seeking an Assistant Coach for Congressional Debate to join its Speech and Debate program, which serves students in grades 5-12. This role is pivotal in preparing students for competitive debate, enhancing their communication and critical thinking skills. The Assistant Coach will collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director of Speech and Debate, facilitating practice sessions, providing feedback, traveling to competitions, and fostering a supportive learning environment. The position is open to candidates in the Raleigh-Durham area and also welcomes virtual coaches. The ideal candidate will be eager to build supportive relationships with students, employ innovative teaching strategies, possess cultural competence to promote an inclusive environment, and have expertise in communication skills. Prior competitive debate experience is required, while coaching experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Assist in running Upper School Speech & Debate practices for Congressional Debate
• Work after school to coordinate practices and support competitive students
• Chaperone and judge at Speech & Debate competitions on weekends to support competitive students
• Provide weekly office hours with students to prepare for upcoming competitions on the local, regional, and national level
• Provide detailed feedback and suggestions for improvement during practice sessions and competitions, empowering students to refine their performances.
• Guide students in mastering essential public speaking techniques such as delivery, articulation, and body language through engaging practice activities.
