About The Position

St. John Paul II Academy in Corpus Christi, Texas, is hiring an Assistant Coach - Basketball for the middle campus. The primary responsibilities of the Coach are to instruct and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in assigned sport(s). Contribute to the Catholic education program as a whole and to the growth of students involved in athletics. This position is closely connected to and assists the Diocesan Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church. As an integral part of ministry for the Church, this position will support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in both professional and personal life. Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church. Continuously grow in the ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in the sport coaching
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with diocesan policies and procedures
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures
  • Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • CPR Certified
  • Must successfully complete criminal history background check, motor vehicle record review, and drug screening
  • Certification in Safe Environment training provided by the Office for Safe Environment and Child & Family Resources is required
  • Must adhere to all diocesan policies and procedures

Responsibilities

  • Use of a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned
  • Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship
  • Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of students athletes
  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis
  • Model performance criteria and physical movement required for successful student performance of sport
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Work with the athletic director to schedule fundraising events, planned special events, practices and any added competition events
  • Ensure all parochial League rules and Middle Level rules are in compliance
  • Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation process of the coaching program and make changes based on findings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
